How about taking away any online modes instead? Too many people (especially game designers) live in a fantasy land where they think everyone plays online. This is often because they worldview is biased, the majority of people they associate with will of course have gaming interests, and many of those will be avid online players.
However, the
vast majority of madden players will never ever play online, and have no interest in doing so. If in the future, online play (X360 for example) became
free, then perhaps more would at least try it. The majority still probably wouldn't. Its a great flaw in the computer gaming industry, that designers think there is far more interest in online play, than there actually is, and thus design games with this element in mind (I know I used to be involved). Of course there are games (Counterstrike for example) really designed for online play and nothing else, but these are niche specific.
If you want to go online and play tiny quarters, and find every exploit to win, then good luck to you, I'll never meet you
