DOF question....

I can't for the life of me recall watching a Steelers game in HD where they blurred out some of the players and focused in on just a few guys? Am I missing something here? Is this just for replays or for taking snapshots or will the gameplay actually blurr out most of the players when I am playing the game? I'm a bit confused and I'm not sure if I like it too much.

You probably didn't pay attention enough. It's not like the cameraman chooses to blur out different players. It happens when the lens focuses. Next sporting event you watch, anything, look for it. Usually during breaks in action when a specific player is focused on. It's also extremely evident in pictures as was posted in Michael Young's blog.

The blog does a good job of explaining it technically. It's not gonna just blur out players while you're playing the game. Judging by the camera view, if it's the classic Madden camera view none of the players will be blurred out because they're all in focus. Things out of focus will be blurred (like the fans, sidelines perhaps, endzone, etc).

Dunno if you can trigger it on or off though. You can in NBA 2k9 (and previous 2ks for that matter).

Mike tried to explain this in his blog but some are still asking so I'll try to explain in a different way.

Technically speaking, we have DOF turned on all the time. This isn't an effect that is only turned on in replays. The way it works though is based on the zoom factor of the camera. The more zoomed in the camera, the more blur you see. In the case of standard gameplay, the camera is not at all zoomed in, meaning you have little to no blur.

This effect will primarily be seen in instant replay or in our post-play shots as the camera is zoomed in on the subject.

was dreading the possibility of dropping back with the QB and then seeing blurry DBs and WRs who are 20 yards down field.

If this is a mostly replay/post play/cut sceen feature then i am excited.

If it results in blurry players during the play, we're in trouble

If you are a hockey fan, next time you watch a penguin game, concentrate on the crowd as the camera pans left to right or vice versa. You will see the crowd is blurry until the camera comes to a rest.

Sounds great to hear this will be in post-play. I just hope that when you say "zoom" you don't mean that quick zoom-in. It was toned down a lot for 09, but I'm hoping to see its total demise in for 2010
