Well depending on who you release it will actually be bad for the cap and it also depends on the teams you use I have never had this problem, unless you are constantly trading for high paid players or releasing players that have a high cap number, which if you do that there will be a penalty against the cap for the following offseason. Then I can see why you have the problem.

Re: Managing cap money

If you want to get rid of a player with a expensive contract, dont release him.
Just resign him to a 1 year contract and he'll be a free agent next year.
you might need to free up some cap,do this by releasing players who dont have bonuses in their contracts. If they dont have bonuses you will not be penalized.

Re: Managing cap money

I'm not 100% sure, but in real life if you resign before the year is up you must pay them for the year + the pay for the year in the current contract.

Also, signing people for one year is generally more expensive than paying them a lot of money over several years. The first year of a contract is also the most expensive because all the good players want a signing bonus.

The best way to manage your cap space is generally to just wait on contracts and resign players at the end of the year during the resigning period.
