IMO, they added one extra step because they figured people who wouldn't use it or know how to would be susceptible to an accidental press of an adjustment button, while they assumed adding one step in between the adjustments wouldn't hurt the more hardcore gamers who knew how and when to use the playmaker.
I hope that's not the reason. I mean, the right analog stick was the only way you could assign a playmaker.... so just don't touch it if you don't want to do it

Also it made the transition from the PS2 game to the PS3 game very frustrating. I would assume EAs goal would be to make that transition as seamless as possible.

Personally I'm not a big fan of doing anything that requires the R stick to be clicked down... those buttons are a bit awkward.

No offense to anyone that had trouble with the PS2 method, but it really just doesn't get any more simpler then that. If you are accidentally bumping your right analog stick then Id on't know.. maybe you need an arcade box or something.
