Human Reaction Time Delay

One thing that has bothered me about Madden is the lack of a realistic delay to account for people's reaction time.

The best example is when a TD is scored. The very instant the ball crosses the goal line, every player immediately stands upright and stops their pursuit, regardless of the situation.

Especially now with refs back on the field. There has to be a basic 1-2 sec delay before they signal touchdown, or before a whistle is blown, or (hopefully) before a flag is thrown.

There's other examples, too. Like how a ball carrier doesn't always realize they've stepped out of bounds, but in madden they always know right away. Also, it seems like all 22 players on the field know right where the ball is the moment it's fumbled.

I know they've already got defenders making the 'tackle' even when a receiver doesn't make the catch. There's also that (too frequent) animation where the defender thinks the ball is still live and runs with it after the play. The new procedural awareness could help, and late hits are in 2010 too, so this is a step in the right direction.

Basically, there's a lot of distractions on the field, and even good NFL players take that extra split-second to recognize what's going on. Lesser players and rookies should take a few seconds to react. Then the top tier players (ie: Reed, Sanders, Polamalu) really will be noticeably better when they display that ball-hawk mentality and are always in on every play.

I just hope this particular little detail gets some love from the devs this year. It would really help make the players 'feel' more alive...

BTW, this would be a great way to utilize the AWR rating

Re: Human Reaction Time Delay

If they over-do this "Time Delay" it will turn into a 2K football game. AKA, the worst user control EVER...

I love the realism of 2K but the ridiculously slow player control/momentum is over done.

Feels like the Devs went AWOL on us this week.

Add to this how a horde of 5 players are chasing the HB even though most of them have ZERO hope of catching him, but they still sprint like they might mkae the tackle... I want to see more animations of players giving up on a hopeless play, and not the same one for two people...

I think this is a great thread, and if Im not mistaken you are mostly referring to the CPU right?

Re: Human Reaction Time Delay

It's going to be interesting to play with the reaction time slider for the CPU finally. I was so glad they put it in, and so crushed when I realized we didn't have access to CPU sliders.

Yeah but in Madden you only have two speeds.. sprint..and not sprinting... if this was Madden Champ would not have been caught cause he wouldn't have slowed down.

I know. Yet another thing where player attitude and fatigue come into play.

Champ slowed down because he was tired/showboating. Bottom line is that these things happen.

Yet another reason to give players a certain amount of "sprint" ability.

Maybe something along the lines of NBA Jam's Turbo (it runs out the longer hold the button).

I would want the sprint bar to be invisible, of course.
