That happens in real life all the time.

If it's in the game, than by all means, put it in the game.

Giving the user the option in the game to hide the potential ratings or show the potential ratings would be great; however, if the user chooses to hide the potential rating, there has to be a feature where the scouts estimate(accurately or inaccurately) how good a player will actually be in the NFL.

you can only see the potential of player on your team anyway...you only know how your players will progress. The potential of every other player in the game is a "?"

I like how it is, you can see your team not others teams. This prevents cheasing by trading an 80/80 player for a 70/90 player.

But also there are times when you can know that under the right circumstances a certain player will reach some level of play (starter, pro bowl, etc).

For example, everyone knew that Steve Young would be a dynamic force at QB. It took a few years and the right team, but eventually he "lived up to his potential."

Hide all ratings for the sake of realism

I understand what you're saying; Sproles' potential increases or decreases depending on the system he is in; however, if he's in say the balanced running back system, and his potential is a 85, his overall in that particular system will never exceed an 85. The user should never know that. The user should have estimates from scouts/coaches that may be accurate or inaccurate.
