that makes no logical sense. Part of bolt's speed is based on his flawless technique and running style. Why do you think he runs with those suits? Imagine the hit his time would take if he even ran in jeans, let alone some plastic shoulder pads that restrict his arms (huge part of a runner's technique), a 6-8 pound helmet, and some spandex leg padding on, not to mention running in thick cleats, not lightweight track shoes.

So yes, I think it would definitely be different running in pads as opposed to without.

As for the 100 yard race or whatever, that was an arbitrary number. My point is that there's speed on a track and then there's speed on grass with pads on and a pigskin in your hands.
No disrespect, but have you ran track or do you know anyone that is gifted with some serious speed? If so, then you should know that if someone has speed (fast), they are fast on a track, a field, on a street, on dirt, in grass, or wherever.

You argue that pads will slow him down. Yes, they will slow him down, just like they will slow down anyone who puts them on. Common sense should tell people that unless he is extraordinarily weak, then those pads will have the same affect that they have on any other speed guy with pads.

His running style and technique only enhances his speed. He still is fast regardless of how he decides to run. What you fail to realize is that speed is something that you really can't dispute. You either have it, or you don't. Guys that run at the combine also have different running styles during a sprint, then on the field. Does that make them much slower? I think you get my point.

To make sure that I understand you correctly, you are arguing that if he puts on pads, or has to carry a football, that would drop his speed to average (80 speed rating)? If he was a WR, he would barely wear any pads anyway. Pads do not weight as much as they did in the 80's and 90's.

EXACTLY!!!... I ran track and played football, and I know that Bolt would still be faster than every player on the field, ESPECIALLY with the world record 100 meter dash. Yes there's football speed but guys who run track don't all of a sudden become slow because you add some weight and put them on grass (sprinters train with weights and resistance so pads don't affect us much). Speed is all about stride length, explosivness, and leg turnover ratio... all aspects which Bolt accels at (he's the fastest man alive!). I wish Bolt would put some pads on and hold a football and race Bush so people can see that it won't make much of a difference (Bolt will still burn Bush). Without pads his speed should be around 110 in madden and with pads it still should be above a 100 (around 104).

I dunno--it seems to me that sprinters are running in a straight line...how would he do breaking on a route? How much would he have to slow down to make that turn on an out? He has amazing speed to be sure, and I don't think pads would make him much slower...I guess I'm just thinking of him as a football player, having to do other football things (like routes), not in pads running in a straight line all game....

I thought the arguement was bush vs bolt in a 100 yard sprint in full equipment? In which case the faster person(bolt) would win the foot race. Yes the pads may slow bolt down but they would also slow bush down to. Maybe if bolt was in pads and bush wasnt it could be a fair race?

As a football player playing Bush is obviously better because he has the moves and the speed. Bolt on the other hand, as far as we know, only has the speed.

I'm not debating his football skills and route running ability. I'm just commenting on these people that think that Reggie Bush or Chris Johnson can beat him in a 100 yard dash with pads on. I'm just saying that just because sprinters put pads on doesn't mean they automatically become "equal" in terms of speed to the faster football players. Personally I think that Bolts route running will be sub par at best, he has long legs and those shorter routes will be his weakness. The only routes he would accel at are the skinny post routes, fades and streaks. If I made his madden rating I'd make speed a 106, acceleration a 102, route running a 39, catching a 60 and awarness a 30 (assuming that speed isn't everything in Madden 10).

I see what you mean...I dunno about catching being a 60...I think he has fairly small hands...but he is fast. I don't doubt he could outrun anyone in the game...

Yea 60 may be a little generous. I could see his catching be a 40-45. And the only reason I say his speed ratings should be those numbers is the madden scale of speed, if they had Devon Hesters speed at a 100 Bolt should deffinetely be over a 100.

I think if the Madden team put him in the game this could be a new example of how speed isn't everything anymore.
