The Genesis gave EA a nice platform to build their sports titles on... and those Sports Titles are a big reason why the Genesis ruled the gaming market during that time.

While Visual Concepts made the better football game IMO, it probably would've been wiser to go with EA, since it was the more established name... however, it would be hard to write off $11 million after buying VC.
Or what if at the time they some how worked out VC and EA to team up... That way the 11 million wouldnt go to complete waste.

But ye its interesting facts...

IMO EA Madden was a little bit better 01-04

NFL 2k and 2k5 were both revolutionary and made Madden step up there game by either installing a new engine or getting exclusive license

2K outdid Madden EVERY year of its existence, 2K5 is just the one that brought everything to a whole new level.

Yea i agree 2k was a better game the entire time EA had the name Madden and it had been around all ready for a decade.

However I think EA wanted exclusivity back than cause NFL Gameday just debuted around that time and it had become the NFL video game king for a short while.

In fact, Sony was already on board to work with Sega and make the Sega PlayStation but the Japanese branch of Sega refused and wanted to go with their clunky, expensive and poorly designed Sega Saturn instead (although that was the best 6 button controller ever made).
Sony was originally partnered with Nintendo to create an add-on for the SNES, not with Sega.

Re: A fun fact on EA and Visual Concepts

In my opinion, not having EA on board when they were the top dog in sports really did hurt the Dreamcast. I owned a Dreamcast and bought NFL2K and NBA2K (Shawn Bradley was a BEAST!!!) but I always felt (and still do) that 2KSports games are an acquired taste. I had all of my friends playing those games, but most of them never really appreciated what those games offered. Having Madden and NBA Live, I think, may have bolstered system sales tremendously.

Do I think Sega made a mistake by not folding to EA's request? Hell no! No way do you cut out your own in house devs to appease any third party dev. It's just a shame that they couldn't work together. It's an even greater shame that the Dreamcast met such an early, ugly demise.
