Re: "Maddden curse" real?

The curse is strongly correlated to the quality of the game. So if Ian and his team deliver this year on a good game, the curse will effectively be broken. That's right Ian, the fate of the cover athlete is in your hands.

Re: "Maddden curse" real?

Look at what has happened to these players a few years later...

Re: "Maddden curse" real?

First of all I'm a packers fan, favre has been hurt a ton through his career, and played through it. He has also had bad years , not half a bad year like last year. Stop posting this crap, curses are fiction, just like harry potter. Humans always have to come up with some ridiculous notion to explain unusual, ironic, or surprising events in life. That's what stuff like this and other superstitions are based upon. Humans need to explain the normal with some extraordinary phenomenon.

Do you realize how stupid it sounds to think that putting a guy on a video game cover is some kinda curse. curses aren't even real.

Yep a mystical god from the heavens above, takes time out of his day of producing images of the virgin mary in toast and random glass fixtures, to take notes on who is appearing on an electronic video game and then summons the powers of satan and sepiroth to produce a curse upon this individual.

Football players get hurt, and usually the players on madden covers, are either older, and had on the best years in there career. So chances are they won't have as great of season the next year. Nfl players play through injuries year after year. Favre had thumb problems, sprains strains etc..many bad games and even bad seasons.

Apparently the madden curse only went in effect half a year last year....It suddenly activated itself after Favre who was playing excellent and his jet teamates beat the patriots and undefeated titans...

Maybe the god was so upset after playing madden 2009 that he forgot to enforce the curse.

I am going to say the brett farve example is resounding proof that the curse exists. A QB known for taking chances and throwing interceptions, a guy who has the career record for most interceptions thrown, takes some chances and throws some interceptions. Definite proof of outside forces.

Re: "Maddden curse" real?

The Madden Curse is not real, and there is a very obvious explanation for it why a trend can be drawn out of people being cover boys and then suffering the following year. Cover athletes are chosen because they are stars at a particular angle, and it is very difficult to remain a star: by the time you are a cover athlete, you've already established yourself and it's likely that you're on 'the downside.'

The same works for other mythic "curses," like the Sports Illustrated NFL Playoff curse. It's been demonstrated that the team that is on the cover of SI during the NFL playoffs, has a higher result of losing their next game... but it isn't a 'curse,' the reason is obvious. SI choses teams that represent some angle, usually, a less talented team who has gone on a hot streak and surprised their first round opponent. Also, any team playing the first week of the NFL playoffs is not as good as the team that they will face who did not play in the first round of the NFL playoffs, by design.

Naturally, when a player is a cover boy of a videogame, it typically follows the same system. There isn't a curse. BUt their is a statistical likelihood or, almost, a statistical certainty that a player who has had a "surprise" great season is not going to replicate that season two years in a row, or, that by the time he's a cover athlete, his ship has sailed.
