Self shadowing?

Check out these screenshots, and notice the detailed shadowing. As far as I am aware this is a first for Madden.

Larry's thighs:

See the line just above the Jet's elbow, also compare his left and right thighs:

Hand shadow near 24's crotch:

See ball:

Ball, Larry's thigh:

If you can't find it by now, especially in this shot, I can't help you:

I just wanted to post this as I haven't seen anyone else bring it up, and it's definitely a significant graphical upgrade. I mean, people have said "Wow Madden 10 looks great!" but no one has actually pointed this out, specifically, and I wanted to make sure it hadn't slipped past your consciousness. Realizing it's there gave me a whole new appreciation for how good these screens look.

Also, it looks like it's not only self-shadowing, but player-to-player shadowing and shadowing on the ball as well! If you know computer graphics, you know that's pretty damn computationally expensive... so kudos, Madden team!

P.S. Can I get confirmation that this is actually in the final game? I know that sometimes companies touch up or turn on all the bells and whistles for early screenshots, only to release with worse graphics.

Re: Self shadowing?

I'm pretty sure that previous maddens had it but this year they improved on it a lot (making it more noticeable).

Re: Self shadowing?

I hope the shadowing is improved in 10. It was awful in 09. Lots of unessecary shadows made the game look like a dark murky mess. It didn't look like a day game at all. More like they were playing at dawn.

hope this actually makes it in game.

You're probably just thinking of the shading of the players i.e. the side facing the sun is bright and the other side is dark. When drawing the players, it is very easy (ok... relatively easy) to just calculate the angle between a surface and the sun and have that alter the color.

It is a completely different task, one far more computationally intensive, to project shadows from one piece of geometry ONTO another, so that you get detailed shadows where one object specifically obscures another. This is how you get the shadows on the "bright side" of the players' bodies with sharp edges. That, specifically, I'm almost 100% positive has never been in a Madden game before, because goddamnit I hope I would've noticed.

Re: Self shadowing?

Shameless self-bump. I want to make sure people see this. I really can't believe nobody from the dev team has touted this one bit.
