Re: Is Madden '10 going to assume there will be a CBA extension?

I would really hate to see the salary CAP disappear. As a fan of a smaller market team, the Panthers, it is very scary for the Panthers as a franchise to have to deal with no CAP.

With the CAP you basically guarantee and even playing field. The only thing that separates you from another team is how you manage your team. Having no CAP generally puts all the talent on a few mega teams while the rest squander. Not only do teams like the Panthers suffer from a talent stand point but from a marketing stand point as well, at home and nationally. It's harder to put butts in the seats with less star power, less wins, and less national attention.

Not only that but it inflates tickets prices, the cost of fielding a team, and the cost of players themselves. Even your average player becomes grossly over-paid, and all the biggest stars are regulated to areas like New York who can actually afford to pay multiple $20 million dollar a year salaries. The small market teams will basically end up being cash strapped and broke.

Commercialism is great for the economy, but it has no place in sports. Sports is all about putting the best competition on the field and having them go at it to determine the victor. It's no fun to have a 32 team league if only 12 teams are basically regulated to competing every decade while the other 20 are regulated to obscurity.

And what happens if one of those lowly 20 teams has a great year and even wins the Super Bowl? Baseball has taught us a lot about that. They'll be picked dry by the bigger teams. It may not happen all at once, but within 2 to 3 years they'll be back with the rest of the bottom feeders.

The bottom line is that the CAP creates equal opportunity. With it you have 32 teams playing on even ground. Any single team can rise to the top. There is amazing competition. Without it a select few rise to the top, and seldom to the lesser teams rise, or the greater teams fall. It may not always seem that bad for baseball, but when your 182 games turns into 16, you find out who the winners and losers are really fast.

I had to chime in on this one.

I do not believe that small market teams would be forced to shut down. Actually that is what the current salary cap system is doing to them now. A no maximum cap also means no minimum too. It would allow for the big market teams such as the Redskins to spend all the money they want. Which they basically already do. It also allows the small market teams such as the Jaguars to spend as little as they would like. Yes it would effect free agency but if you really look at it, teams like the Jaguars aren't big money free agency spenders anyways. Small market teams would have to stick to building through the draft and make sure every pick counts and rarely miss. That's how the small markets teams would be able to stay competitive. It wouldn't have any effect as for as revenue is concerned.

My 2 cents.

In terms of real life, no teams would be forced to shut down, but I do think we would see much less parity then we do now.

In terms of Madden, I highly doubt they would add into future years of franchise until future games when/if it actually happens.

No salary cap would totally ruin the surprise of the NFL in my opinion.

It'll be like the English Premier League (soccer). The top 5 richest clubs competing each year.

Now don't get me wrong, those top 5 clubs are amazing to watch. Stockfull of amazing talent. But the it ruins the unpredictability that is core to the NFL.

I hope the salary cap stays. I dont want the NFL to turn into the MLB. However I must say it is a bit unfair to football players who would make far more if they were just as good at baseball.
