This is the worst cop-out excuse ever. Try thinkin deeper.

The difference is that in real life, the referees have the awareness to at least attempt to get out of the way of any play that they think they're in danger of interfering with.

What if in Madden 10, it's almost impossible to run a delayed slant or in route because of the ref/umpire positioning? That would be "real" per your definition, but it would suck balls

Then the ref should be PROGRAMMED to get the hell out of the way.

Re: Running Through Ref Issues

But the point is that it's possible, whether it be through a programming flaw, poor animations or just bad AI, that the referees WON'T get out of the way, something that's not an issue in real life.

Re: Running Through Ref Issues

If consistency is your argument then i disagree... The players aren't ever affected by the ref, they always run through him.

The only one you claim to be affected by the ref is video 3 and you are wrong... the HB is running a curl and the ref just happens to be there... he in no way affects the HB's route.

TBH... i really couldn't care less about the player/ref interaction... PES has this and it's the most annoying thing ever when it happens.

I assure you that while it's annoying with one ref on the field, add several refs and i can't imagine the disruption it would cause.

Let the devs come up with a working model rather than throwing a half assed attempt for this year.

Aesthetically it kicks *** though!!

Re: Running Through Ref Issues

You can program a ref to "duck" in a video game better then you can expect a real life referee to duck.

You guys make it sound like video game refs are as unaware as real life refs LOL - yes, maybe if the programmers are morons and can't write some simple AI scripts...

We're talking about video game code here - real refs are more prone to getting in the way then a properly coded video game ref.

There's no need to get rid of their collision detection if you program them to auto-duck when a pass enters their "zone", and you can program them to always attempt to stay at least 5 or 10 yards away from any ball-carrier.

This way, if the USER decides to run TOWARD a referee, it's totally their fault if the ref "interferes" or not on the play. Same with passes. Natural referees picks happen in the NFL sometimes - and usually it's accidental. It's not like teams practice slants WITH a fake ref to try to get a free ref-pick on a DB.

I think the possibility for ref interference SHOULD be in the game, but very rarely - again, the programmers can make the refs do whatever they want to.

Re: Running Through Ref Issues

What if by doing that, the refs gets in the way of a pursuing linebacker or safety? Or what if the QB still has the ball? Obviously, the ref is in no danger of getting in a QB's way unless he scrambles, so how do you code a ref to not ever touch any of the WRs, LBs or DBs?

Now you're gonna say it shouldn't be never, just not often. That's also an issue. How easy/hard is it to find the balance of referees physically interfering with plays as opposed to avoiding contact with players?

I remember the refs on PS2 that would play defensive back against you, cutting off your receivers on deep routes.

Good times...
