Funny thing is, look at MLB2k baseball. They have competitition, but that game is having a lot of trouble making improvements. Competition does not always mean an improved game.

The lack of competition is a part of it, yes. I don't think it's laziness though. It's like anything else in life - fear is a huge motivator. If you have no fear of losing your job, naturally you're not going to push yourself to work as hard. You may run fast, but put a dog chasing you - you'll find a way to run a little faster. It's only natural not to push yourself as hard if you don't have to. And for a while now Tiburon hasn't had to. Lack of competition affords them the luxury of being able to be as open about the game as they have been. Lack of competition affords them the luxury of being able to mention the following year's game to wait for certain improvements, before this year's game is even out. Personally I think the various teams over the years have all worked hard and had the full intention of trying to make Madden into a good game. There are other factors why it hasn't been good, be it skill level, office politics, corporate structure, or whatnot. But lack of competition is obviously a huge factor.
