I TOTALLY get what you're saying. I just think that the actual distance covered in a given amount of time on Madden 10 is fairly, not realistic, but fairly realistic. I thiunk that most people think that the game is slow, not because of the distance/time thing, but more so becasue the animations look really lazy. The legs are moving slowly so it looks like they are jogging and not really running hard, but I think that they cover about the right amount of distance though.
I know that in their easports blog weekly sessions that they did one on the speed of the game. Ian said that he looked at it and concluded that the 40 times weren't realistic. So he slowed them down to be more in line with real life. Now that kind of tweaking has to do with math computations. I am not a big fan of Tiburon and their programming ability in the least on many issues, but any programmer has to be good at math at lest lol. If we can't trust them to get a math problem right, which is all this is, then they shouldn't be allowed to touch any part of any code for any reason.
Basically what I'm saying is, based on those vids, and the fact that Ian looked at making 40 times more realistic, and the fact that this isn't something that is anywhere near that complicated, I think that I would have to assume that if they are off, it is by a tiny margin.
What they need to improve is the running animations on several different levels, not the least of which is to have better visual representation of when a player is actually running at top speed, and to just convey a better sense of speed in general. I think that would go a long way.
