Players holding out should take a hit

Which would be:

Andre Smith
Eugene Monroe
BJ Raji
Michael Crabtree
Aaron Maybin

These guys missed almost all of training camp and will take time to learn the playbook.

I'd say:

Andre Smith drops to 75 (from 79)
Eugene Monroe drops to 77 (from 82)
BJ Raji drops to 76 (from 80)
Michael Crabtree drops to 78 (from 84)
Aaron Maybin drops to 75 (from 78)

I agree 100%. There losing valuable practice time so their awareness should definitely take a hit.

if you look at past history, players like cedric benson and jamarcus russell who hold out into preseason usually turn out to be busts

At the rate Crabtree is going he will be rated a 38 by week 8. Rookies are really taking a chance missing camp their first year. Generally they turn out to be a bust or do not actually become a decent contributor until year 2 or 3 after the miss their first camp. They spend all of year 1 just trying to catch up.

Re: Players holding out should take a hit

Sure, and free agents should also take a hit, considering they don't know the playbook of whatever team hires them. Please.

Oh, and lets not forget that "bust" in SD who held out for 25 days in 2004, Philip Rivers. Right.

The only thing holding out seems to impact is rookie year performance, and even then it varies by position. Seems far to niche and nit-picky (let alone a mess to deal with on a day by day basis roster wise) to do for little to no benefit.

phillip rivers rode the bench for 2 years. players in free agency at this point are usually mediocre.
