Re: Can we....
The only reason this forum is so full of 2k comparisons is because 2k and Madden do all of the opposite things right. I'll explain:
In my opinion, Madden does a lot of the franchise stuff right, and it's been this way since 2k5 and Madden came out the same year. Franchise mode in Madden 05 was STELLAR. Drafts were random and fun (at least for simming - kind of tough to develop late round guys, but it was still fun) signings made a good bit of sense...franchise had depth. 2k, by comparison, had a pretty terrible franchise mode. The first round of 2k5 drafting only contains four positions. Free Agent signings make no sense. You can't fire coaches. On top of all that, freezing sometimes becomes an issue after multiple seasons. In short, what Madden has done right with (relative) consistency off the field...2k did wrong.
On the other side, 2k's gameplay always felt closer to being right to me - and that gap has only grown since 2005, except for this year, where it's started to head the other direction. The point is this: most of the on the field problems that plague Madden - the big problems with the game - those things were all done RIGHT in 2k5 and 2k8. As a result, when experienced football sim players express their frustrations about Madden since 2005, our instinct is to compare Madden now to 2k then.
The point here is that everything that's wrong with Next Gen Madden was right with 2k5. If Madden 10 played like a gem on the field, with realistic blocking, guarded flats, accurate physics, and some organic play elements...the 2k comparisons would go away. Furthermore, if Madden played like a gem and was plagued with franchise problems, we wouldn't be comparing Madden 10 to 2k5 anymore - we'd be talking about how M10's franchise mode paled in comparison to M05's franchise mode. Something along those lines.
Basically, the bulk of the problems with Madden were done right in 2k. The inverse also applies to 2k - the things 2k did wrong (Franchise) were done right in M05.
I hope that makes some sense. We need some sort of a model to compare M10 to, to try and get things where they should be. For most of us, that model happens to be 2k5 or 2k8. I want Madden to blow both of these games away. No question. It's not doing that though.
