i think offensive line matters somewhat as well. i often use the bills and texans. the bills have a terrible offensive line and the texans line is just average. but you play with teams that have pro bowl olinemen like the vikings or the jets or the giants and you are having yourself a field day following blocks.

Off tackle and toss plays work best, IMO. Well, as long as you have a speedy back. Also gotta mess with sliders. In my first season with McFadden, I rushed for almost 1400 yds at 4ypc.

Everyone's suggestions above are great, and don't forget to mess with the game speed slider. Some people (like myself) are geared toward playing the game at a faster speed and the game out of the box is too slow to time your moves. If you have played a bit of NCAA 09 / 10 (and had some offensive success) you might prefer the faster speed settings in Madden.

Others like the slower pace and feel like they see blocks develop better. Don't be afraid to tinker with the settings a bit, you'll be glad you did.

One thing you might want to try and something i have some success with, is to run an ace formation and select a pitch or a toss and then check the linebackers at the LOS. if theres only one or two in the box do a formation audible to a run up the middle, if not go with the toss. This way works about 70% of the time for 6 or 7 yards, if you can read the defense right.
