I actually presented this idea a couple of years ago I believe (might have been 3). I'm with you actually, and I don't think in any way this hurts EA's bottom line at all. EA has to print discs, manuals, disc cases, and shipping (the obvious costs) when they make a new Madden game each year. If Madden was updated every year through an expansion pack, they wouldn't need to spend on those things and just make it available via DLC.

This not only saves on those costs, but it also gives them more development time. They don't need to stop development early enough so the final build can go to the press. They can literally do it days before the DLC is to become available.

I would actually be surprised if eventually EA doesn't go with this model. It is a more profitable solution in the end.
