How do you level up on-line?

This may be a dumb question, but this is the first year I have played on-line. How do you level up? Does a higher number usually mean you are dealing with a higher caliber player?

It's all based on points gained or lost in matches. Once you reach a certain plateau you level up. I'm not for sure of the point tiers to reach each level or how many points are assigned per win/loss, but if I'm not mistaken you gain more points for wins versus higher rated teams when using a lower rated team and less obviously for using a higher rated team versus a lower rated team.
