A similar thing happened to me on NHL '95 for Genesis. I accumulated so many points during the regular season that it made the game freak out; long story short, I ended up in last place in the division and failed to make the playoffs after winning like 65 games in the regular season.

just goes to show the AI in this game is a freakin joke...yet to compensate for the ******ness of the AI you have CB's who turn around and pick off passes without even looking at the ball....sad...
