But this formation guarantees that you will get a good running game going. And if you learn how to pass in it, you are good to go.
Sounds like a treasure hunt

Might have to start experimenting with other playbooks now - especially since I love the running game

I have the same feelings; pinch does nothing but make all of the blockers look inside but not block anyone. If you want to run straight up the middle then spread seems to work the best. For runs where I want to run on to the outside of the tackles (i.e. the LT) or seal off the DE then calling a line-shift to the right seems to work.

...but just like LB stated, sometimes it works beautifully and sometimes it blows up in your face. I have a hard time with counters sometimes but the power-O run actually seems to do pretty well for me; I just have to go a bit slowly where the play is designed then shoot the hole rather than try to bust it to the outside.

For my running game, I've had to really handicap myself b/c I can get 4-5 ypc pretty easily...of course I use the right stick to juke a lot so that is very influential as well.

Re: "Pinch" and "Spread OL Assignment and the Run Game

One helpful consideration on these plays some have trouble with and others don't is the relative awareness of the OL and DL in question. I can run misdirections and counters better against DL with low AWR. I also know that b/c my own line is young and has modest AWR, we don't pull some of the pulling/trapping plays off as well as other lines with more experience.

Anyway, it seems like the answer to my question is "we're not sure," but the discussion has been interesting.

Thanks, all!

I tested some more, and it looks like whenever the Guard pulls on a play that the line will not respect the OLine call that you make. Has anyone else verified other types of plays?

Man, all this time I thought the line calls were only useful on pass plays. I've randomly called them on running plays for the hell of it, but never thought anything of them. I'll play around with these soon.

I call line audibles pretty much every play, because I dont want to tip off when Im passing the ball.

I dont know..I'll have games where I am not doing any running, then all of a sudden break off some chunks of yardage..but I have no clue whether I would have ripped off those runs anyway. I would think I probably would have.

Re: "Pinch" and "Spread OL Assignment and the Run Game

I know the Steeler playbook has some real nice runs in it, but I use them so I know the formation Lbz is talking about isn't in the PIT book.

BTW I've played a few hundred ranked matches and never noticed a consistent formation that runs well.

AW, I just thought of a new way to maybe look at line calls in the run game. Maybe instead of trying to visualize gap responsibility by your OL, visualize where you think the blitz is coming from and adjust your line call right at the blitz and see if that does anything. It seems kind of intuitive to me to lead your protection at the blitz and prevent penetration into the backfield.

Edit: @ Lbz. I think I know what you're talking about. I don't remember running into it but it may be worth it to practice with and against that formation just to get a basic gameplan down for it if it's really that devastating.

Yeah it's not in Pitt although Pitt has some pretty good runs in it. I just don't like how certain playbooks are the "money playbooks." EA needs to stop that.
