Horrid = D line Play

Guys what am I missing, I am trying hard to enjoy this game but the edge rushing in this game is trying my patience. I have tried many sliders and options, but hopefully I am missing something to get more productivity out of my DE's?

Use the outside rush line call when on defense in pass situations. That will help them try to get an edge on the Ts and make it a one-on-one situation.

You can also shift the line pre-snap and mix up the line rush calls (like spread the line, but then rush pinch to get to get inside the Ts, or shift left and rush left while bring an OLB from the left, etc)

On run situations, watch how the CPU runs against you. Many times against my teams it's outside running, so I'll often spread the line (but not do an outside rush on top of it for a run situation, now PASS situations, I will - if the DE is fast, they have a chance to just burn around the T without being engaged, but in a run situation, I just want them to attack and hold the edge).

With the line spread, I'll often bring the LBs in, or "show blitz" to get them on the line and help cut off any cut backs (especially if I call a Mike/ILB blitz) then it would be up to the DE on that side to hold and the OLB and FS/SS to flow to the ball carrier. The DE might not get the tackle, but he does his job by stretching the run and keep the HB from getting his shoulders upfield.

Re: Horrid = D line Play

I have found to get a good edge rush you must reassign the ends one at a time...because the problem with the spread audible is this...one the ends and DT both take two steps to the sideline..ie they go way to wide then come directly down...now after you reassign the ends...u must off the snap rush to the outside shoulder of the tackle...use alittle speed burst if u need and use the stick to swim outside...should give u a nice edge to the QB..the main problem i have is there should be times where the OT is just to slow and get beat to touch the end...the OTs are to quick in this game at times...

In my first ten or so games I maybe had 4 sacks, then I figured it out. Change the slider for pass blocking to 0 and the pass rush to 90. I now can average at least two sacks a game, which is respectable, and I got 43 sacks in a year with Elvis Dumervil at LE

Re: Horrid = D line Play

if you know it's a passing situation, spread the line and do a manual stunt with a DT to the LEs side. usually the RT and RG have a hard time picking up the assignment. If you have a decent LE, he'll put good pressure on the QB.

oh yeah, and I play on All-Pro with the CPU pass protection slider at 45

It is possible to have a good pass rush in madden but to me the animations still look absolutely horrible. I get annoyed at seeing the same few animations every play of every game. EA really need to step it up. I know that there is a limit to the amount of animations that can be put into a game but that doesn't mean you can't try to evenly distribute them.

Thanks guys, all of your advice really helped open up the pass rush, BUT I agree with chargers 4Now, the pocket development and animations with the pocket "collapse" I guess you call it, looks very odd and disjointed. I don't really understand why it is like this with the development of that "new Tak engine" when other football games (including first gen madden) seem to have this down. The way the DL goes wide and then sort of vectors back in looks so unnatural I actually stopped using that line play it kille the immersion.
