Besides being annoying, repetitive, inaccurate at times, predictable, much too frequent.........

the number one issue with the cut scenes is they interfere with a hurry up offense. there is nothing worse than being down a couple scores when every second counts, and here comes the chain gang. I can't tell you how many times i've need to run the hurry up and the chain gang forced me in to the play selection screen, even after hitting the hurry up button 20 or 30 times during the cut scene.

Obviously, live would be better than cutscenes IF it were able to work properly and not look like a mess of unintentional collisions. But I don't think people realize how terrible the outcome of this would be with the current technology. You would have to have players suddenly breaking out into a scene post-play with a bunch of players surrounding them as the play just ended and everyone is getting up and trying to get back to the huddle. It's already shown to us that the players in Madden can't stay out of each other's way and are constantly bumping into each other post-play... trying to have a scene break out suddenly would be a disaster of collisions and bumping. You can actually see a lot of that when a player celebrates post-play, now.

The technology just hasn't reached the point where this problem can be avoided without doing some drastic and awful counter-measure like making all players move away from the celebrating player so no one bumps into him, lol. That would look ridiculous. So for the time being, I'd rather have some cut scenes than none or some alternative that would look awful.

The other thing is that I think a number of people have "post-play" and "cut scene" mixed up and tend to lump them both in together. To make a quick example of the difference: A post-play scene in Madden 10 is a common scene that takes place when a tackle is made and the angle changes to get in close. People tend to call that a cut scene but it's actually a post-play camera angle. Another one would be when a player makes a play and he celebrates by himself with the camera spotlighting him and the shot is not large and full screen.

A cut scene in Madden 10 would be when a sack is made and suddenly a full screen shot of two defenders celebrating takes over the screen. Or when a QB throws an INT and you see a full screen shot of him sulking about it with a teammate beside him encouraging him...

Like my Wishlist thread on this addresses, the people who don't want more presentation elements would more than likely also want both post-play AND cut scenes eliminated, so for them an "off" option is ideal.

I think Rgiles nailed it when he talked about the issue with sequencing. Let me tell you a few scenes that make it clear that sequencing and timing is an issue:

*There is a kickoff and right after the Kickoff a scene of the QB on the phone plays. Then you call a play and the QB is suddenly on the field, defying time and space. This could've easily been avoided had they put the scene in prior to the kickoff, and at least instead had a scene of the QB running to field after the kickoff... of course there is no scene of the QB running to the field in Madden (a staple scene in TV football broadcasting for many decades), so right there is an opportunity to not only fix sequencing but also bolster presentation.

*As far as timing goes, there are a number of factor, but for me a great deal of it centers around the intrusiveness of the playcall screen. Here is a great example of why I complained about the playcall screen from Community Day and never stopped all the way through the reveal of Madden 10 to the public... I was playing a game with the Bucs and I scored a big TD. The Bucs pirate ship started shooting off and smoking, this is supposed to be a hot scene. I'm not a Bucs fans, but if you are one you LOVE to see this as I do too... but guess what completely ruined the scene? The playcall screen was RIGHT on top of it and I couldn't see much of anything. You just facepalm at stuff like that, because you have this great scene destroyed because of the bad timing of the playcall screen.

And that's where I'll finish with this post; This is why there needs to be options for presentation. If you don't care about presentation then what I described means nothing to you, but if you do care things like I've described completely wreck the experience. One-size fits-all presentation has got to go.

This is a terrible thread.

There's absolutely nothing wrong with cut scenes in a game. HOWEVER, the fact they are implemented where each scene has one result is really, really poor design.

The first down scenes... from one side it's always a first down, from the other, it's always just short.

You can implement them without canned results. This is the problem that most developers DON'T do. Would make quite a difference in the game.

And how about booth reviews? Specific challenges? You can go on and on as to why the game doesn't have that suspense at times, but using cut scenes is not one of them, just the result.

Cut-scenes suck! Period! Or exclamation point!!!

The on field stuff, where the refs run in to spot the ball, TD celebrations, post play celebrations by defenders, all that should happen within the context of the gameplay!

Replays of touchdowns should go like 3 seconds beyond the "end" of the play (I can not tell you how many times I have watched a TD run replay get cut off right as the ball crosses the plane leaving me pissed that I can't save the "whirly-bird/helicopter/ oh my god he broke his neck" part that immediately follows!!!! In fact, I think that if you choose to do a user celebration (shameless plug intended) - the replay should go all the way through the end of the celebration!!!

Cut-scenes are nearly as annoying as the severe lack of variety in the announcer's script!! They both suck!!!!

Oh yea, while I am on this topic the "Fight for the Fumble" deal needs to be simplified (tapping the strip button until you think you have the ball and then holding or tapping the "protect ball" button to keep it in the pile) and it should happen within the context of the gameplay, not be some dumb freaking exactly the same "cut-scene" that completely ruins the flow of the game. What if during the FFF the ball squirts out and is recovered in the field of play? Can't happen in Madden but it does happen on Sundays - If its in the game, it should happen during the gameplay!!!!!!!!!!!

I like them but they do become stale and interfere too much.

The answer is to have MANY more of them and use them less. Have cut scene's showing some small details. A coach talking to an injured player on the sideline, a player taunting the crowd behind the bench after taking a lead, players pulling turf out of their helmets after a tackle (on grass only!), a QB blowing on his hands in cold weather, and so on. More of this stuff, shown less frequently would add to realism.

If there's hundreds of them and they only play 3-4 times a game it will take years of playing franchise mode to see them all.

^^^Again most of that stuff should happen in real time post play!!!

The sideline stuff with coaches and players is the only kind of cut-scenes we should ever see.

When there is a measurement needed, the ref should signal for it, the chain gang should run out, stretch the chain and we should see how close or far the thing really is and it should flow just like the gameplay, not be some silly pre-scripted exactly the same mini-motion picture that never changes!
