The thing that you need to remember is that when you start your franchise, you may be 40 million under the cap. And they you may sign a bunch of guys and think you are in good shape because you still have 20 million in cap space. However, the game gets you. When you sign a guy, watch his year by year. He may only make 2 million on year 1 of his contract giving you plenty of cap space, but all the contracts in this game are heavily backloaded so by year 3-4 he could be making around 8-9 million. If you signed 5 guys like this, your salary cap is eventually going to go through the roof.
One way around this is to sign guys to extensions. For example, say you originally signed Landry to a 5 year contract. In year 1 he made 2 million and year 4 he is making 9 million. If you sign him to an extension now, year 1 of that contract might be around 3-4 million as opposed to 9 million, which will save you some cap space. However, its always a balancing act that you need to continually manage. The cap is virtually an illusion.
