The difference is you move the spot where the ball is thrown to and not at any particular receiver. You throw to a spot. At least that was what you had to do in Joe Montana 94 when you turned on icon passing.

The icon is on the field and you can move it. Unfortunately everyone who plays the game and posts videos of it, either never use it cause it is too difficult or have no idea how to control it.

It is the landing spot graphic, the one you see when the receiver is going for the catch in the video. When you turn on icon passing you were able to manually move that landing spot.

I love the old Montana/NFL games as much as any kid from that era, but the passing mechanic was actually the worst part of that series.

Not only did it take way too long to execute a pass, but the ball itself would hang in the air forever, making user INTs far too easy.

Especially with the way that game was coded, if you got to the target spot first, you could just stand there and hold your ground and no one else could move you off the target.

There's a reason why everyone always ran the ball in those games, and it's because the passing engine sucked.

I actually I had a friend who figured out who to get around that by diving with his receiver and catching the ball beofre it could hit the landing spot.

I agree... I was the one that brought that into the last thread about passing as a side note, more then anything, and this guy just ran with it. I think that there could be a compromise if they just exagerated the systeme they've got now so that if you hold more to the left or right too much, you over throw the guy or really lead them... Some QBs that have great touch will never over throw their guys, others with lesser ratings will lead their guys way too much and result in poorly thrown balls... I think they just have to expand on what they have while also changing the ball flight mechanics so that you can do lob passes, or timed passes...

Hold for deep balls with a lot of loft, using animation to determin when to release the ball...

Tap once for a bullet with little lob...

double tap for a timed route or throwing to a spot that the WR will have to run to...

And for all of these you can still lead a guy a bit in what ever direction you want, just more relevant then what we presently have...

I think if you want a realistic passing game they should look no further than the read and lead feature for Fever 2004. Check out this vid.
