"..a giant list of animations that match in any given situation.."

thats the problem in the first place, so we will still have players playing this game and moving to 'certain' areas to get this or that canned animation.
calling certain plays and moving the stick this way or that way to get desired animation, this logic is still seems wrong to me.
but at least it sounds like this tool will help more.
I know what you mean. I was hoping there would be a bit more of a free-flowing environment with this years Madden. More similar to how APF feels with the passing game... Just better polished.

well hopefully for each situation there will be many, and i mean many animations so that it sorta does feel like it is free flowing and the players are reacting to the ball instead of setting up specific animations

Re: Madden 11 - Live Chat - Catch Tuning Blog Q&A

I would like to ask about two things.

1. This is not the answer to this question below but they are related

last year on all madden there tended to be an abnormal amount of no-contact drops, will this be addressed?

Madden NFL Dev Team:
The catch rating is used to determine his chance of hanging on to the ball with no pressure around him in a normal situation. We switch over to catch in traffic if he's getting hit or if defenders are around.

I would ask if you know this for sure since they actually seem backwards, even the commentary goes the opposite direction. It seems it triggers the catch rating in traffic and the catch in traffic of wide open passes. At least to me a player with a 99 catch and and 80 CIT will grab and hold on to the hospital ball, but will drop a wide open pass, while Collinsworth talks about how hard it is to make catches in traffic.

2. [Comment From StayPlation: ]
in tunning the catches i'm wondering does the catch rating mean the same across the board. a running back's 80 vs a cornerback's 80?

Madden NFL Dev Team:
They are all consistent, but the defender has a little bit of a disadvantage because the defender has to 'find' the ball (which lessens his catch chance). The more time the ball is in the air while a player can see it, the better chance he has to catch it

This one also seems backwards, if I lob a ball up in the defenders will drop the pick most of the time, but if I fire it in very fast they pick it about 80% of the time.

just a thought.

Thanks for this!!!! I saw the first part, but had to leave for work. Thanks to you, I get to finish it without having to search all over the place for an archive of it.

Madden NFL Dev Team:
The tool's main purpose is to give us a giant list of animations that match in any given situation. So for your example, we now can see that maybe only 1 catch matched on the sideline, so it's now up to our animators to add more variety and create those types of moments. Before it was very much guesswork and trial-and-error.

Unless i completely read wrong, this person did not even come close to answering this question. Almost every other question they answered the right way, this one they were no where near it. Just tell us, are there times where there are 2 feet in, 1 foot in, or they can't get either foot down?
