Ranking the Most Important Defensive Positions in Madden

How would you rank the most important defensive position in Madden? Obviously the importance of each position will vary depending on the style of defense that you play.

I would argue that in any formation in Madden it should always start with cornerback. When you have an elite corner like Asomugha it's key to slowing down the opponents passing game, and in some cases shutting down an entire side of the field.

How I would rank the most important defensive positions in Madden...

    In a 4-3
    1- Cornerback
    2- Middle Linebacker
    3- Defensive End
    4- Defensive Tackle
    5- Outside Linebacker
    6- Safety

    In a 3-4
    1- Cornerback
    2- Middle Linebacker
    3- Outside Linebacker
    4- Nose Tackle
    5- Defensive End
    6- Safety

    What do you guys think?

I would have to agree that a strong cornerback is a great player to build around and is key having a solid defense. I also thinks its key to have at least one good defensive end or linebacker to stop the run game as well. But definitely cornerback.

Haha that has nothing to do with it. Revis is the best corner in the league.

Re: Ranking the Most Important Defensive Positions in Madden

See I have a problem with Madden, DE's in the 4-3 should be thos most important because if you get pressure off the edges, your corners wont have to stick so long, and your safeties wouldn't be too troubled. But in Madden there are no dominant DEs that you can let AI handle getting to the QB.

Just like in the 3-4 in Madden. You get these 300 lbs DE's and the big cloggers in the middle like 330+ but each one only demands one blocker. . . really ? So I'll get back to this thread when I play the game and see Vince Wilfork or Haynesworth or even Trent Cole can demand a double team, or can get pressure by themselves if not the most important for any scheme will be your secondary then LBs.

Re: Ranking the Most Important Defensive Positions in Madden

                Good thread!

I'm surprised that safety isn't rated higher on the list as far as importance in Madden goes. 90% of the guys I've played use either their MLB or their FS and the ones with the best stick always go with the FS. I wish DE and DT were more important, but truthfully, there's almost no differentiation between the elite and the average at those positions.

Because of that missing aspect, I don't really see much difference between 3-4 and 4-3 as far as the importance of the positions. I run 3-4 because I love having a couple of stud ILBs to wreak havoc on the O-line.

                1) MLB
                2) S
                3) CB
                4) OLB
                5) DL

For me the MLB is one of the least important for me as I usually control him while I'm playing D so don't have to worry about his stats that much apart from speed and strength and tackling really, because I'm in control of most of the others.

Well playing with the Cardinals I find that Dominique Rodgers Cromartie (DRC) is the game changer on my D so I would say overall CB is the most important.

That seems like real life not Madden. DT's in Madden are beasts at pressuring the QB. Especially NT.

Re: Ranking the Most Important Defensive Positions in Madden

This is for sure a list for MADDEN and not football. In football, in the 3-4, the NT is the most important part. I don't know why the NT is 2ed on the Madden list though. At least as of Madden 10, because we don't even have a demo of M11, I don't know why D-Line isn't at the bottom of the list.

In Madden, I would say Linebackers are the most important. Corners mirror routes in man coverage. Linebackers actually make the defense go. Linebackers do the blitzing, attack the run, flow sideline to sideline [defensive linemen in madden, unlike real life, do not flow and push while being blocked on stretch plays,] drop into zones, etc. Some even claim that hey have super leaping ability, though I have only seen that when people throw bullet passes right at them.

After that it would be our FS and SS. In Madden, these guys are your "second level linebackers" and should be treted as such.

This is a great thread by the way!

Especially in a 3-4 a DE is most important. If he can get pressure on the quarterback, you'l see less accurate passes into the secondary, helping the secondary, making the secondary better.

On the other hand, if you have a good secondary, who can defense the pass, that won't make your D-line any better.

the best position on defense is a great offense who milks the clock.

and vice versa.. the best position on offense is a great defense who gets the opposing off the field quick.
