Re: Overall Rating vs. Individual Attributes

The problem here is threefold.

First problem is the overall ratings and the fact that they have no direct translation to the players performance on the field. As tomriddle writes above, individual ratings are more important than overall ratings when playing the game.

Secondly, many of Madden's franchise features are determined by the overall rating. Say, edit a 85 OVR OLB into a 98 OVR DE get a brilliant deal when trading, or change a 95 OVR HB into a 48 OVR TE before re-signing him to make him reduce his contract demands, and all of this despite their individual ratings are left unchanged.

Thirdly, the use of linear individual ratings makes every player a potential superstar as the system assigns no special abilities to elite players. Therefore, a rookie WR can be can be more effective than an elite WR, who has proven that he is a weapon to be reckoned with.

EA simply needs a new approach on player ratings and needs to find a way to emulate abilities.

that's just crazy talk

if all things being equal (they all got spd/acc/agi/cth/etc)

Damyrius Thomas and Brandon Marshall's RLS rating destroys any other WR in the game

period

After witnessing Damyrius go for 4 TD's and 400+yds in one game, this is when I literally caved in and checked his ratings out, the first time I ever noticed the RLS rating of which he only has 1 rival, Brandon

maybe you're a Lions fan I don't know, but from an unbiased point of view (I'm a JETS fan)

the best of the best when it comes to WR's .. Brandon Marshall and Damyrius Thomas (even with his sucky low 80s ovr)

Re: Overall Rating vs. Individual Attributes

The answer is, "It depends."

For my every down players, yes, overall is the most important factor.

For my role players and specialists, I pay attention to skill specific positions.

For nickle dime, dollar and quarter sets, I want my best zone coverage linebackers int he game, at all times, regardless of overall ratings.

I look for strong press coverage, and zone coverage ratins out of nickle and dime backs, and back up DLs and LBS with high finesse/power move ratings and block shed attribute to subistitute in the game for pass rush purposes.

Offense, same deal..I want quick recievers with good route running skills and hands as my slot guys.

Re: Overall Rating vs. Individual Attributes

Last year I worshiped the OVR score, for my defense I only hired LBs for everything apart from CBs. Had a 96 defense that rocked in zone cover... but couldn't blitz for peanuts. Struggled against the run too, I couldn't figure out why.

This year I'm worshipping individuals and ignoring OVR. Maybe swinging too far but I'm totally sold on it. And the reason is Mike Williams.

Check him out. 69 OVR, not fast, not agile, but he's a big 6'5", jump is good, catch is good, truck is good... With a couple of injuries to my WRs early in my franchise, I had to play him. All of a sudden he's out-jumping the CBs, bulldozing through safeties... probably won't ever break a 90 yard TD but for short/medium tight situations he's the best in the game... well, for the money he's getting paid.

Re: Overall Rating vs. Individual Attributes

I don't care about overall.
The guy talking about a Marshall clone....Arrelious Benn over Thomas as far as release/RR/catch/CIT/truck/run block. I drafted for an an online fantasy franchise and I filterd through truck and run blocking from WR's first. Then looked at RR/Release/CIT/CTCH. When I drafted for defense I mostly valued zone coverage/finesse move /BLOCKSHED/tkl/hit power.

Edit/ Acceleration is also a more important attribute this year.

First of all, the overall rating is composed of a weighted average of several relevant ratings. This, however, is faulty as some ratings only matter when simming and some matter only when playing the game. Nevertheless, both groups of ratings contribute to the overall ratings.

Secondly, overall ratings are arbitrary and do not emulate real skills. Most people here would agree that Ngata is overrated as an 88 overall MLB or an 85 overall SS, but those are his overall ratings at those position in Madden 11.

Personally, I am disappointed in the lack of commitment from EA on this issue. Donny Moore wrote last year "One of my personal goals is to have the actual NFL players in Madden NFL 10 look like their real-life counterparts and play to their strengths and weaknesses like never before in a football video game." and then EA Tiburon announced Player Ratings - A New Philosophy, a New Era with the description ”We basically stretched out the ratings.
