Franchise Mode: Player is on roster, but will not play in game

While playing a franchise (offline) with a couple of my buddies, something odd happened. One of my friends had a couple of his players no longer playing.

They are on his roster, they are starting, and they are not hurt. Yet, they do not enter a game or accumulate stats during the season. (His starting receiver, both D-ends, both starting CB's and free safety would not play) Re-ordering the depth chart did not help.

After doing some tinkering I found that if he released the players then re-signed them, they would be able to enter the game and accumulate stats. If he just signed them to a new deal they wouldn't play or accumulate stats.

Has anyone ever experienced this before? Is there anyway to fix this other than releasing them and signing them again?

What you have there is a case of your player "holding out". Unfortunately, release and re-sign is the only way to get around it. What I typically do is change them to kicker before I cut them (especially if there's a big penalty), then sign them to the same year deal but at minimum cash (considered "cheating", but I already paid for that player once, so whatever). That way, I only have to take one big cap hit rather than two 5yr/50 mil contracts. If it's only a few 100k, then maybe it's not worth it.

I hope this answers your question!

I figured it was something like this. Is there anywhere that it notifies you that players are holding out?

Thanks

Unfortunately, no. In previous versions, you could see it in the player management screen. In recent years, it's believed that the coding for that stuff (player morale, holdouts, player roles) still exists, but is turned off to the user.

I see a lot of people posting about this, what season are you in franchise? and does this only happen when you control multiple teams in franchise mode? I'm about 5 seasons in to a new franchise and haven't run into the problem, thank god.

I'm doing the franchise with two of my roommates we each control two teams (1 in the AFC North and 1 in the NFC East). We don't allow trading t your other controlled team.

It happened in year eight. My buddy had ****ed up his cap the year before and had to cut a lot of players. The next year we noticed a lot weren't playing. It's probably related.

Well hopefully for Madden 12 they turn it back on and we can have some real holdouts like we had before. Hopefully it's not going to be too crazy where we have low OVR players holding out for no reason.
