My 2 cents. Soccer doesn't work in America. Here, our 2nd and 3rd class athletes play soccer, while our best athletes play the other popular American sports.
That said, I TRY to watch soccer whenever it's on. I have several friends, both international and domestic, that watch soccer religiously and are knowledgeable about the game who have attempted to explain the reasons Soccer turns my stomach:
1 - They go backward too much. I'm all for setting up a play, but if Soccer had a backcourt violation like basketball - all that holding the ball for nothing would cease and Americans might want to watch...
2 -I really can't watch guys run around for an hour and a half, only to have them score 1 goal - IF THAT. If guys run 7 miles per match, I expect at least 1 point per mile.
Since 1995, I've seen at least one match from each of the World Cups and have only seen 1 that held my interest. Spain vs Mexico (don't remember the year) tried to SCORE the entire game. The rest of the matches were droll at best...
Fortunately, the saving grace for soccer is in the last 2 minutes of a tie match where the players play AGGRESSIVELY (like they should have played the entire game).
(No one we want to watch) + (boring strategy) = Soccer in America
If that makes me (and my fellow Americans) uncouth because we don't have the patience to watch nothing happen for 90 minutes... So be it.
Soccer is the only sport on the globe that makes me giggle when people mention it. LOL

I'm no soccer fan or player but as with any sport: 1. It helps if you grew up with it and 2. it helps alot to understand the game. I thought Nascar had to be the most boring thing on TV. 50 cars going around in circles and you can't even tell where the front or back of the line is. But when I went with a friend and he explained the strategy it was much more interesting. Soccer too. There's alot more to it then you realize - it's actually alot like hockey. Subtle rule differences but the strategy is similar.
