A new edition of EA Sports‘ Madden NFL has become as sacrosanct as the game of football itself when it comes to the annual rites of fall. While obtaining a copy of Madden NFL 12 on its release date of August 30th would be sweet, greater glory is attached to getting one’s hands on the Madden EA VIP Kit. With just 50 units made, the kit comes in special packaging and features an early copy of Madden NFL 12, a pair of Monster headphones, a New Era snap back emblazoned with the words “I am the Madden curse,” and a customized silver PS3 with “It’s Time” stamped in bold block letters on the console.

Those are sweet but EA had it all wrong. Let's give free copies, headphones and new PS3's to those that can afford 100,000 of them. That will reward them for their loyalty to a product that has been vastly underwhelming on next gen.

That's what amazes me most. What about some of the people within the Operation Sports community? The handful of people who push ideas to the ones from EA coming here on what needs to be fixed, what we would like to see and so forth, I think should be receiving these.

50 Cent, Timberlake and the rest, I highly doubt are giving ideas to EA on how to better improve the game.

It's not about these guys helping to improve the game. It's about advertising. They send this stuff to the VIPs and maybe Justin Timberlake mentions Madden in an interview. That shot of (a slightly dazed and confused) Snoop Dogg with his new Madden gear is great advertising.

And lets face it, these guys get anything they want anyway, so just an early copy of Madden won't cut it. If EA wants to impress someone, they have to go all out and send them a custom PS3, headphones, all that jazz.
