This or NCAA for n00bs?

I haven't played a football game since Tecmo Bowl and am thinking of getting back into it since EA's NHL keeps making me angry. Which football game (NCAA or Madden) is better and easier to get into for someone like me? I would ideally like a game that supports multiplayer franchise/career mode and would allow 2 on 1 and 1 on 1 local multiplayer gamesin franchise/career, online would be a plus but not required.
I am not a hardcore football fan and am also wondering if either of these games has an accelerated clock or something so people don't really take 30-40 seconds to get every play off. Also do people think I should get the newest '12 versions or are they only marginal upgrades over the '11 versions so I could just get one of those since I am not a hardcore fan?
