Just curious for people's opinions and ideas for realistic trading in franchise. This thread is not for those you just want to be champions each year and fleece the rest of the NFL on every trade.
I usually use this as a guide....and I play a 32 team chise where I make all my own trades:
1. A team doesn't fill a hole by creating another hole. IE. Trading Brady for Andre Johnson.
2. Most NFL trades do NOT involve a player for player swap. Check it out if you don't believe me. Yes there are a few here or there but mostly they are for draft picks.
3. For that matter, teams rarely trade their #1 pick. When they do they are getting a star player that they expect to be around for a while.
4. Teams may draft to stock up at a position or to fill holes. Once they do they do not trade away that player they picked. IE. The Bills draft a QB with the #1 pick. No way they trade him away (if they needed a qB which they do) no matter what you offer them (unless it's an established star qB...which no team would trade anyway). The only time teams trade away top picks after drafting them (I'm talking about the same season, not 3 years down the road) is when there is a prearrangement with another team (not sure that's allowed) or the pick informs them that he will not sign (See Eli manning).
5. Teams usually try to trade away older more expensive players to get draft picks (ie, younger, cheaper players).
6. If a team has a good young player (say in the 80's ovr with good potential) and a high priced older player (say in the 90's and 30 or more years old), they often release or trade the older guy.
7. More good players get released than traded (usually because they are getting older or are not playing up to their hefty contract - see Albert Haynesworth). yes some get trades but just go online now and look at NFL transactions since the lockout ended. More big name players were released ala LT from the Chargers.
8. Just thought of this. Teams don't give up good draft picks for aging, possibly over the hill players with one exception: If a team is really close to winning it all and they need that one guy (like the Vikes when they got Favre) they may be willing to mortgage the future to get a guy. I did this in a chise back on Madden 08 (at least it's the only one I remember). Can't remember the players involved but I had the Bears in year 3 or 4 of a chise. They had a 90's rated D. Forte was a good back and I'd drafted some good reciever and the O line was solid. No Qb though. I brought in someone (McNabb?) and traded away my 1st and 2nd round picks.....it didn't work though....
These are what I go by in my chise. I think most of this is what the NFL does anyway. Feel free to challenge me on this or post things I haven't thought of or what you just plain disagree with.
Just please keep it real guys.
