Who wants to have to worry about a stupid ref running into your player and ruining the play? Chances are, if they implemented a collision detector for the refs it would happen waayy too often

There's enough annoyances in the game as it is.

If you could collide with refs, I'd invent my own mini-game where me and my opponent compete to see who can take down the ref the most times.

My brother used to do this on NFL QB club 98 i think. Sucked cause we would play on the same team and he was too focused knocking the ref over.

I was about to post something similar to this, sarcastically but you posted it being serious.

I disagree with the premise that realism should be avoided because of the potential flaws of it's implementation. Given the history of realistic things that were added and overdone, I understand where you are coming from. However, features like the pump fake, surprise onside kick and sideline catches does show that they are capable of getting the balance right, too.

Directly to the OP's question, I think it's because lord forbid a casual gamer has to account for the Umpire or Back Judge, like real life, when playing. It's cool to make refs holographic for gamers that don't want the challenge of accounting for them but there should be an option.

The simple answer is to program them in a way so that they avoid contact, as a real ref would. I wrote about it way back in 2003, but was more about what 2K4 was doing:
