Sorry, I think you're absolutely wrong on that count. The reason why soccer and american football keep to be compared to each other is because both are very popular and, as importantly, both have the same historic roots, having developed out of the same game in the 19th century.

The reason why soccer isn't as popular in the US has a lot to do with historic reasons, the original game of "football" was more akin to rugby than anything (although there were a lot of differences, of course) and while in the late 19th century, when the game came to the colleges of the eastern USA, they invented the "uncontested scrummage" that lead to the game of gridiron football, while in the UK, they did away with the scrummage pretty much altogether which lead to the development of the game of soccer.

So it's not just conincidence that both games are called "football", because around 150 years ago, they were the SAME game, so it's only logical that were one develops, the other "version" isn't as successful, at least from a historical perspective, and it makes only sense to kind of compare the two to each other, since there are/were a lot of similarities.

I think you're mixing up the births here... Soccer isn't Football's brother, but it's grandfather.

Soccer's been around for centuries... Rugby developed from it, and American football from Rugby. Scrummage wasn't done away with to create soccer, it was created to establish Rugby. Americans made it uncontested and eventually replaced the "U" with an "I" and added pads (which, paradoxically, resulted in a more dangerous sport. If they really wanted to minimize injuries, they'd eliminate pads).

lol that recount couldn't be more wrong. "Soccer's" history dates back much, much further than the 19th century. Like, try multiple centuries BC.

I mean no disrespect to the game of soccer, I was just illustrating why Americans don't care about it (myself included). There are simply 'cooler' sports to play in the US so our best athletes aren't playing soccer. Our children play until they reach high school - then the better more gifted athletes play something else.

Don't be fooled. I try to watch soccer whenever I flip channels and see it - BUT it seems to always confirm my opinion of the sport instead of challenging it.

Soccor would be much more exciting on a smaller field I believe, less players. Much easier to score.
I think soccer needs something like Hockey or basketball... An offensive, neutral, and defensive zone or some type of backcourt violation. Nothing sucks worse in soccer than seeing them kick the ball backward more than they kick it forward.

I need my sports to be a little more aggressive... The final 2:00 of a tie match is very exciting. It's the other 88 minutes that suck.

That's what I said. Or are you talking about the guy I was replying too?
