Shouldn't I have been able to challenge this catch? (pic inside)

I might be mistaken on what an NFL coach can challenge... So I decided to snap a pic with my cell-phone and post here to ask.

(Sorry for the poor image quality.)

I was playing as the Pats against the Bills. Steve Johnson is seen below stepping out of bounds with his left foot. A second later he made a catch in-bounds for 11 yards and a first down.

I watched the replay, and sure enough his left foot was out of bounds just before the catch. But I wasnt able to challenge... the option to challenge was not available in the pause menu.

Why not? Cant you challenge this in real life?

I'm pretty sure Madden doesn't reflect the NFL rule that receiver cannot go out of bounds and then return to the field of play to make a catch (ineligible receiver). I'm pretty sure you could challenge the play under this rule in the NFL.

I believe the rule is that if a player steps out of bounds, they cannot be the first one to make contact with the football. But if the pass was tipped or deflected, the receiver would be able to catch the ball.

That being said, in the NFL it could be challenged and the call would have been overturned. But unfortunately in Madden, there are limitations to what can and can't be challenged. I guess EA didn't see enough of this type of play to add it to the list of challenge'able plays.

Ah, ineligible reciever... yes. I was pretty sure it was something like that. But I wanted to post to be sure. Thnx STP.

It's unfortunate that Madden does not reflect this rule... I suppose this is a microcosm of how poorly the challenge system is implemented in Madden in general.

Another example was when I had a RB fumble the ball when his knee was down. I challenged of course thinking it should not have been a fumble in the first place... but the game reveiwed the play as if I were challenging the spot of the ball where the other team recovered... Ridiculous... Who in the world would challenge the spot of the other teams ball after a fumble recovery?

I wish you could highlight the specific player who's activity you're challenging. And have all of that players actvity "checked" for infractions. That would be a simple adjustment to Maddens challenge system that would work wonders IMO.

But now Im branching off to the problems with the challenge system as whole :P

Anyways, thanks for the answer. A MOD can close this thread if need be.

You also can't challenge a play after watching it in replay mode.

Are you sure?

I have watched replays on fumbles and touchdowns and stuff, and then went ahead and challenged it. Just last night in a game my RB was ruled 4th and inches, I watched the replay and felt he did cross the 1st down line. I challenged and won.

Do you mean you cant watch replays in certain situations and then challenge? Because Im 99% sure I have challenged several times after watching replays.

I mean in real life there are guys up in the booth watching re-plays and telling the coach to throw his red flag... thats the same as watching the replay and then challenging in Madden.
