Stopping runs outside the tackle?

Anybody have some decent plays to stop the run plays outside the tackles? Every play I call it seems everybody just rushes the middle once they recognize run, including the safty.

Against a human being...

- Contain the edge with a DE or OLB. Add a safety zoning to the flat if needed.

- Stunt the defensive line to the side you expect the run (usually the wide side).

- Shoot the gap immediately after the snap. Zone runs and Power plays leave the middle exposed early so you can hit the back as the ball is handed off (Beware the Iso).

There are many ways to contain outside runs... These are just a few I like to use. Hope they help.

3-4 odd cover 2 sink. Manually cover the middle with a lb in case they cut back inside.

These pretty much work against the CPU as well with the same bewares (Iso middle runs and middle draws).

Calling flats zone plays if they are constantly going outside is a scheme adjustment you can make as well. If you don't want to totally give up the middle, leaving the DL in a typical set but using the edge rush line call can also help (along with spreading the OLBs as well - another "safe" option to try to get your defenders a step)
