Franchise Cap

I'm trying to get a grasp on how cap penalties work in franchise mode.

Chris Snee has a 6 year contract but is in his last year of it. This year he will be making $10.73M. His total bonus is 12.00M. At the end of the year, before I progress to the offseason, would it be more beneficial for me to take the $2.00M cap penalty by releasing/trading him, or pay him 5x that on his salary and not re-sign him?

The answer is obvious, I'm just not sure if I'm going to pay $2.00M for the next 6 years or just for the current year..

Re: Franchise Cap

Cap penalties are always the current year. So just one year

Re: Franchise Cap

So with the situation I just described, I'd save $8.00M, correct?

One other thing. At what point do the players actually get payed? Is it as soon as the offseason begins?

Re: Franchise Cap

Right you would save 8 M.

But I do not know when the penalty kicks in or when the players get paid

Re: Franchise Cap

I don't see it as really ever being 'paid out', it's more of a limit on the total of the salaries on the team at any one time.

Re: Franchise Cap

The cap is just all the contracts on your team added up, minus any penalties there's no pay out, I'm not sure what function that would serve. If a player is cut all that needs to be accounted for is the bonus money, since nothing else is guaranteed.

Ahh I see that, thank you.

The problem that arose for me is that I noticed that the cap penalty compared to the last year on a big contract are dramatically different. I'm paying Eli Manning like $22.00M which is coming out of my cap. Instead I could release him before the season is completely over and rather than paying $22.00M, I would only have to pay 8-9M penalty. That's if I am comprehending this correctly.
