U can still play offline. Just the same mode as online with some slight changes. But I don't think u will be able to get any roster updates without gold. Not sure. I'm not an xboxer

No you don't need xbox live gold to download the latest roster and tuning sets.

I think this whole single player online thing is a big waste of time. Sure it works, but that is just enabling EA to inflate numbers, report back to the board, and gives them an excuse to keep things the way they are and tell people to go online so they can extend the time it takes to fix the offline.

Plus it also forces people to get xbox live gold who may not have ever wanted it b/c they didn't want to play online, thus adding another expense.

So as you can see going online has much more of a gradual snowball effect than what appears on the surface. I have never had xbox live since the original xbox and never will. That's what a PC and MMO's are for. Needless to say I also don't have Madden 13.
