ESPN THE MAGAZINE pg 132...as everyone is saying

Whats on p. 132 of ESPN The Mag is a one line blurb saying EA would be willing to buy player rights of the NFL for a 9 figure sum. It's one line. The first place this appeared is in the Sports Business Journal and the mag more than likely picked it up from them.

Only believe it when you see it reported everywhere citing an official press release as source. The stories I've copied below were broken by the reputable Wall Street Journal and New York Times. They were rewritten 100 times by a hundred different sources including yahoo, reuters, msnbc and bloomberg. However, the stories below obviously weren't true.

"Sega seeking Electronic Arts cash"
Source-Wall Street journal who read it in the equally reputable Nihon Kezai Shumbun out of Tokyo

News from Japan suggests EA will invest in Sega and possibly buy out CSK Corp's stake in the company.
The Japanese newspaper Nihon Keizai Shimbun has reported some new developments on the Sega's financial future in its Saturday-morning edition. The word from Japan is that Sega is in negotiations with Electronic Arts. The details obviously aren't set in stone at this point, but the deal would have EA provide a cash infusion for Sega and possibly buy out CSK Corporation's 22 percent share in Sega. As a result, EA would have access to Sega's experience on the distribution and development fronts.

``For Electronic Arts, there's quite a lot of synergy if they were to buy Sega,'' said Toru Hashizume, an analyst at Tokyo Mitsubishi Asset Management Ltd.

Nintendo to Buy Sega
Source-New York Times

Japanese video game systems company Nintendo is in talks to buy rival Sega for about $2 billion, the New York Times reported on Wednesday, citing executives close to the negotiations.
