I guess my issue is that I feel like I am making the wrong calls on Third Downs. I am ok 1st & Second Down but I am getting killed on Third Downs.

Does tightening your D-backs help on third down or do people stay in normal coverage.? Is zone or man better on third? Obviously I know that it will vary based on your squad and the opponents team but is there anything that tends to work more than not.

I will say this. I defintely prefer the CPU driving down the field now instead of having those 4 play drives with bombs all over the place. The passing game is sweet this year.

Side not: I've only been able to play a few games so I am guessing that most of the issues are just lack of time with the game. I really think you have to know your plays and your matchups this year. A lot more realistic than years past. The only problem is that in years past I had more time to play the game.

Ok, in terms of playcalling, it depends on the situation:

If's it's 3rd and long (<6 yds) you definitely want some sort of nickel or dime package. The Off. team will most likely be looking to pass, so this puts enough speedy DB's on the field to cover their wideouts. Now, you just have to decide what you think they will do... throw short, maybe go long, over the middle, down the sidelines, coming across the field with their top receiver... and pick a defensive play that will cover it accordingly.

If it's 3rd and short (>4yds) you want to go with either a 4-3, or 46 Bear. They're more geared to stopping the run. Again, pick your play accordingly.

3rd and 5 is almost like a black hole... they can go either way... in that situation I usally go with either 3-4, Nickel, or 46 Bear.... it's the toughest down and yardage to defend against, IMO. The Off. team has too many options...

You definitely want to look for quick slants, hooks, and short out/in patters on 3rd down when it calls for a pass... nothing too complicated. In terms of the run, usually an offtackle or sweep/counter are run... you rarely see a team bring it straight up the gut. On these plays, it's good to blitz the man from the weak side of the field and control the guy on the Strong side, so you can cover any holes if they run your way, recover and defend the weak side if the blitzing lineman gets picked up, or cover the TE or something over the middle and short if they do decide to Play Action.

PHEW... that was a lot, but I hope it helps. The complexity of sports is where I find their beauty.
