I remember the earlier versions used L2 on PS2 or clicking in the Left Thumbstick while throwing to lead the receiver better. Can anyone figure out how to get this to work or have any passing tips? I can't get these routes to work at all even in practice mode.

Use the d-pad to lead as opposed to the analog stick on deep routes. I've found much more success (in practice anyway) this way. Check out this thread from yesterday (already buried on page 3 lol).
