I've made a blog posting on the ever fun debate on cheese play and I've went over the responsibilities of the gamers and the developers in this ordeal. After positing it though, I've thought that this would be better expand into a thread though. Read my blog first, then reply on there or here. Why is cheese such an issue? Will cheese play restrict the potential of online play? Do you agree with my stance? Is it impossible for cheese to be completely removed or unsuccessful?

My opinion is that you can't ever rid any game of cheese, someone will always find an exploit.

Also, cheese should never be used as an excuse for a feature being left out.

I agree with the first part...people always find the exploit that why it's not fun to play online...

I dont think anyone is to blame...its just the way it is.

Fatigue.....Ian said it was besically removed to counter online no-huddle cheesers by NOT fatiguing the defense.

The easiest way to stop cheese is to make plays less effective when you overuse them. In reality defenses would begin to adapt if you ran the same play out of the same formation again and again. Yes, in a few instances a team will run the same play over and over again and dominate in the NFL, but this is a rare. The game AI could react to make bad things (drops, fumbles, etc) happen if you were cheesing.

This seems like it would be easy to program since the game can already remember highlights from the actual game.

The constant no-huddle issue is a little tougher because teams actually do runt his in the NFL and if you add fatigue the defense would have to be affected as well.

That doesn't seem very realistic though. Just because a play get repeated, doesn't mean players are going to start dropping balls and fumbling it all over the place just because it's the same play.

No scrambling out of the pocket, tap sprint and your pass is never completed.

That removes 80% of cheesing already.

Actually it is realistic. When a defense recognizes a play it reeks chaos on an offense because it usually throws off the timing of the play which leads to the offense making more mistakes. The defense is able to be more physical and dictate the action that is going on during the play. Offensive chaos leads to 3 & outs or costly turnovers. Once a defense has a bead on what the offense is trying to do they are in for a long day. Just look at how the Ravens dismantled the Dolphins vanilla on trick pony offense this past weekend.

Fatigue, as has already been mentioned, but also laterals were left out for many years because of fears they would be abused online. The last minute removal of the wildcat formation from Madden '09 also springs to mind.

That removes 80% of cheesing already.

Are you being serious? That would make the game far less realistic, which is the opposite of what most people want.

This would remove alot of the cheese alone. Most of the cheese comes from the QB running at full speed and throwing with pinpoint accuracy while still on the run and not setting their feet.

This would remove alot of the cheese alone. Most of the cheese comes from the QB running at full speed and throwing with pinpoint accuracy while still on the run and not setting their feet.

Then the accuracy issue should be fixed rather than just getting rid of scrambling. There should be a rating for throwing out of the pocket, and if it's low then you should get bad passes.
