Has anyone seen a game in 1080i on their PS3s?
It does seem a bit rare.

The only games I own that support it are The Darkness and Warhawk. Pretty much everything else is 720p.

People with HD sets that don't do 720p are rather screwed with the PS3's lack of upscaling.

Re: Madden in True 1080P

I read the first couple of pages. Someone may have said this already, but I can't go through all of it to see.

The game is rendered in 720p on both systems. The 360 has a dedicated scaler chip for games that will up-rez the game to 1080i or 1080p. The PS3 has no such chip.

Madden supports 1080p on the PS3. The only way to make the game play in 1080p though is to actually uncheck 720p and 1080i in the Display Settings on the XMB. Doing that will make the game run in 1080p. If you have all resolutions checked it will not go beyond 720p because that is the native res of the game.

However. All TVs that have been manufactured within the last 3yrs or so will always SCALE a source to match it's native resolution. If you have a 720p TV, it doesn't matter if feed it a 1080p source, it will scale it to fit its 720p pixel format. If you have a 1080p native TV, it does not matter if you feed it a 720p source, it will still scale the source to match it's native res. Keep in mind that when you hit the info button on your TV, it will tell you what res the actual source is. If it is different than the native res of the TV though, it will not be what it is actually displaying as.

Bottom line, even if you have Madden play in 720p on your PS3, if you have a 1080p TV, it will still scale it to match it's native res. It is an upscale done by the circuitry of the TV. Just like the upscale done by the 360's scaler chip.

This does not just go for games, the same goes for movies, TV, and using your TV as a PC monitor for that matter. The ONLY way that it makes ANY difference to you what so ever whether the scaling is done by the TV or by another component (ie game console, Blu-ray player, Upscaling DVD player, etc...) is whether or not one of them is doing it improperly. If your TV upscales just as well as the 360 scaler chip then you will see no difference whether the scaler chip is on or not.

Bottom, bottom line. It's all upscale. And yes I have the game. On PS3. And I have a 58" Panasonic Plasma. And no the game does not look totally different whether I set the PS3 to display it in 720p or 1080p. It's not some major difference. It's all in your head.

We'll I don't game on my PS3 it's more of a BR Player. I do have The Show 08 & I play that game in 1080I when ever I fire-it up.

Give what I suggest a try with Madden 10 & see what happens. Remember the PS3 has offered many firmware updates, 1 of which is the ability to play games in 1080I if I'm not mistaken

The game would have to specifically support 1080i. If you uncheck 720p, which every game supports, and no other resolutions are supported by the game, as per the back of the box, then the PS3 will display it in 480.

FF

Ian had to be confused or thinking that madden on ps3 supports up to 1080I

The game is made for 720p which I remember him saying was the best setting for madden on ps3

If you have all the boxes checked then it will run the game to is native resolution which would be 720p

If you uncheck 720p and 1080I then the game will scale to 1080p via the tv's upscaler since ps3 does not have one

It will not make the game look better but it could hurt it due to frame rate issues or possible exta jags

The game on 360 states it is native 1080I on the xbl marketplace under game info

But I feel that is all talk since the game is also made for 720p but the 360 has a dedicated upscaler which would improve things

You are mostly right, but the biggest problem is in the statement that is bolded. The upscaler MAY improve things things, but it is not a definite. If your TV upscales better than the chip, then the chip would actually be a detriment to you. And there are TVs that do a better job of upscaling than some players.

The chip probably does fine, as does your TV, in which case it makes no difference that you have the chip or not.

Not a huge deal, but to say that the chip "would improve things" may not be accurate. It could improve things. Could make no difference, and could be worse than having no chip at all. Depends on the TV, or receiver for that matter if you have one that does upscaling also.

madden is not native 1080p.. why people keep thinking this is beyond me ..no offense..but the game is being upscaled, simply put..madden is native 720p but it DOES look good at 1080p upscaled. There simply isnt enough vram for true 1080p with madden..yeah some games are 1080p native but VERY FEW..FYI

Because most people don't fully understand how TV tech works. It's not a big deal.
