Need 2nd opinions...

Hey guys,
So there is a guy that has been hitting Donny and I up on Twitter basically all year with requests to add missing players to our rosters. Now we all know that there are some rather stringent limitations currently on our rosters, so it's been tough to really address his changes since we were just out of room.

However, he's put together a rather lengthy thread with explanations on how we should remove players altogether or move them to FA to make room for other players in this thread:

So what I am asking you guys, since I know a ton of you play Franchise mode, is a 2nd opinion on whether you think we should do this. It seems like a pretty major change to Franchise if Donny were to put a ton of these guys that are really on teams and under contract into free agency. So right away when the Franchise starts you would see Limas Sweed on the Titans or something. But he does make points as to why to do this...I just thought it'd be a good idea to consult you guys as well.

Thoughts?

(PS I don't need to be reminded that if our roster system was more robust we wouldn't have to deal with this...that's a separate thing we're working on anyway.)

I do think you tend to keep retired "big names" on the free agent list longer than necessary, and it always bugged me that free agents during training camp stuck around but players ON rosters during training camp were cut from the game, but I don't see a good alternative to the way you're doing it.

If a player is on a roster, he shouldn't be on the FA list. If a player is on IR, I'd rather see him out of the game for now.

With the season over, I'd go with what the team's healthy 53 would have been. Anybody on the roster but wouldn't be if it weren't for the injuries should be left off... most of them are low cost backups to fill a spot.

If you put them in FA, why not add some caveat where they can't be signed? Because the reality is they ARE NOT FA's.

To just put them in FA is ideal to having all the correct players in the game, but to have them completely wander once you begin a dynasty isn't exactly what I'd expect to see in my franchise.

If you dump them in FA, who would they replace? Or would you just expand the amount of free agents available?

We can't do that now. We're talking about Madden 11 for this...that would require a patch (of which we are out of).

Unless there's an option to turn off FA signings, def. not. What if Drew Brees gets hurt, and then signs with the 49ers? That would ruin my franchise for me.

I didn't realize you were referring to Madden '10.

So you'd dump them all in the FA's just to get them in the game?

It's not the ideal solution but those that would be inclined to assign all the correct players would at least have the ability to do so...

Definitely so drawbacks to it but if they're in the NFL, they should be in the game.

I don't think that's what he is saying. I believe he is saying he would have all these players dumped in the FA "team" just so players have access to them as opposed to them not being in the game at all. I don't think it means if someone gets put on IR they get released into FA...

But again my question is who do they replace? I'm sure there is a max roster size maintained for one reason or another, so you can't add that laundry list of players without sacrificing someone...

I did see the list. Is it possible to remove those players to FA AND add all the newer players?

It seems to me you'd hit some roster size limit, even with the Free Agent "team..."

If the Free Agent list has no limit, I don't see why it would be a big deal. Sounds like an adequate solution to me.

If you have to remove all those players, then while people may run into issues in the off-season if someone signs as an "experiment" we'll probably be well into M'11 at that point.

I actually like this idea. Why not? You're getting players in the FA pool are actually on an NFL team. The 1 in 32 chance is good enough for me.

As for the comment regarding Drew Brees or another elite player being injured...don't put him in a situation where in ends up in the FA. Just lower him on the depth chart. But for those who are not at that same level...try it. It's a risk, but its not a bad idea at all.

Couldn't you put those guys on a holdout status for the length of their injury or even add a second roster to your out put that just holds original rosters with all players healthy. With backups used during the season in the FA pool and erase guys who weren't picked up during the season. or erase older vets in FA pool

Until the roster system becomes more robust, just keep it as is. Or if you must do something, you could put all of the PS players into the FA list. IR players shouldn't be put into the FA market, and should be removed from the game to make space for other players on the roster.

My issue is if Drew Brees is in the FA pool, couldn't the cpu sign him at will?

I agree ryan putting dree brees in FA Pool wouldn't be smart for IR , but I was thinking they are talking about current rosters and players playing now not in our Franchises. If we are talking about current franchises , I think they should have a franchise roster that has current teams actual starting players, and the FA pool should be the replacements teams used during the season. whether or not teams end up with right players on team when players are hurt if very depended upon the season in which you are playing.
