WR Screens
Can anyone get these to work? I'm talking about the WR screens, not the mid screens. Mid screens work well, but the WR screen never works for me. It's like the O-linemen totally miss the CB, S, and OLB on that side of the play and by the time I throw the ball, one of those 3 guys is on my Wr for a pick or a quick tackle for a loss. From what I can tell, it looks like the O-linemen don't come out far enough into the flats to block which leaves one of those 3 guys unblocked. I spent the better part of an hour in practice mode and only got this to work a few times and that was only because my WR broke the first tackle. Does this play ever work for anyone? If so, how do you do it?PSN - Splff3000

Re: WR Screens
Check for zone, if not dump it or run, it is a one second read, just drop back one step and throw or run.
Bubble screen are awesome if you get zone coverage too.
I never get negative yards/less than 3 on screens, unless they user the corner.Comment

Re: WR Screens
Maybe I'm holding the ball too long or something then because the defense is playing zone a lot. I watch the CB drop back into zone, then he realizes what's happening and comes in hard towards my WR. He always comes in free because the Olinemen aren't far enough into the flat to block him.PSN - Splff3000

Re: WR Screens
Huh? The only other route on the play I'm trying to do has the WR on the other side running a streak and he's ALWAYS covered lol.
I tried doing what you other guys suggested and started throwing the ball right after the snap and that just results in an incomplete pass or an int to the CB that' jumping the route. There were some rare occasions that the WR actually acted like he wanted to catch the ball and actually went and got the ball and had a minimal gain. I think I'm just gonna have to give up on this play. I'm just not seeing how this is supposed to work.PSN - Splff3000

Just do this. Once you see the DB drop back into a zone throw the ball. If you see the DB jump on the WR thow it to the receiver on the other side. I usually hot route him to do a slant.Huh? Re: WR Screens
lol I don't know why I never thought to hot route the other side. Maybe it's my players then or something. I'm playing with the Raiders. I tried the quick throw thing to no avail. The Wr usually hasn't finished his small curl yet and is running backwards at that point and the ball goes 5-6 yds behind the LOS. I can get a few yds back, but it still ultimately ends up as a loss.PSN - Splff3000

I know this is a lot to ask, but could someone post a vid of how they do it or a vid of someone else doing it for me so I can see how it's done. I can't spend anymore hours in practice working on this one play lol.PSN - Splff3000

Re: WR Screens
WR screen from a shotgun is a good play but its a pre snap read . What your looking for is a zone defense and looking to see if the CB is playing off.
If your going to make your read post snap your fcuked as theres no pocket.
WR screen and bubble screens where you have two or three WR's on the same side of the field helps with the read as you can simply count the CB's on that side of the field to see weather its man or zone.Comment

Re: WR Screens
WR screens have a 50/50 chance of working. If the opponent is playing zone it is easy. if they play man you cant use them.Comment

Re: WR Screens
Re: WR Screens
I play as the Redskins and so the WR screen is very useful.
The key to this is the pre-snap read.
Anytime there are two DBs on the side of my WR Screen (I use Minnesota's Playbook). I always change it. Odds are even if it's zone, the #3 DB is covering the flats and it's an easy pick that way too. You have to catch the defense in a Cover 4 or Cover 1 for the highest success rate. (If they are heavily blitzing thats also a good time to use it even though they may be playing man you just have to be careful)
Once you decided that it's safe to run the play hike it. And just watch the DB on the WR. As soon as you see him step backwards throw a bullet pass.
This is how I do it and it tends to work very well with Santana Moss.
Try using the WR screens out of 3 or 4 WR sets.
Don't try using them alot, or even every once in awhile. I run a screen only when I notice my opponent laying alot of zone or I need a long 3rd down (Using mean Cover 4 or Heavy Blitzing)
You also have to learn to take sacks instead of throwing it if it's covered.
Another note: The difficulty of running a WR screen depends on if you are playing CPU, Ranked Match, or an Online Franchise game.
I suggest practicing it if you are struggling that much, but I find the reason it fails is just people mis-reading the defense or not reading it at all.
Edit: The WR's BCV can impact the efficiency of the blocking also. Santana has like an 88 so it works well.Last edited by Kahuma; 11-28-2011, 03:17 PM.Comment
