    Why use the Franchise Tag?

Just wondering if I should be using this feature in my franchise mode in Madden 12, but I'm not sure in what circumstances I should use it? Why not just re-sign my players at the end of the year as normal?

This isn't like Madden 12. If your player wants to test the FA, your only option to keep them is to give them the tag. Of course it might kill your cap (like in the real NFL)

In Madden 12 or any other Madden for that matter, I never had problems re-signing people so the tag was useless. I'm hoping that in Madden 13 this changes and some players refuse to re-sign, and you have to use the franchise tag. Just my 2 cents.

Exactly the same for me. Not entirely sure about the Franchise Tag rules though, so I'm not sure if maybe it would free up some cap space or something by placing someone on the franchise tag, rather than just giving them a big contract?

Re: Why use the Franchise Tag?

You utilize the franchise tag on a player you may not want to sign long term but want to keep for at least another season. Say you have a 27 year old DE that hasnt hit his potential just yet but preforms decently every season since he was drafted. You don't want to reward him with a big contract in fear that he'll never be the guy you wanted starting for you so slap the tag on him and give him a year to prove himself worthy of a bigger contract.

The tag is a 1 year deal that pays the player an average of the top 5 at his position. It's a lot of money for one year most of the time but it also makes the player very tradeable since there is no bonuses involved.

For example in my Bucs season when I pick up M13 in my first off-season I have a pretty good feeling I'll put the tag on Aqib Talib. Unless he has an all-pro season of course. Im just not sold he is the long term answer for my Bucs secondary so I'll tag him and maybe try to trade into a high draft pick for a top rated CB. If that doesn't work out I'll have a pretty good CB for at least one more season.

Yes and no. The franchise tag causes a high salary, which can create issues with the cap of that season, but the franchise tag has no signing bonus. If you sign a guy to a long term deal, with a signing bonus, then trading that player can be a cap nightmare with the huge cap penalty. If you intend to trade a player whose contract is expiring, tagging him may be better than signing him to a longterm deal, so you have flexibility to trade him.

I believe i read somewhere that if you low ball someone you are trying to re-sign they will refuse to sign with you, so maybe this year the tag will actually come in handy.

^This, players can and will refuse to re-sign with teams, making the franchise tag actually valuable and a viable option this year in madden.

Re: Why use the Franchise Tag?

This is in Madden '13. Matt Ryan's contract is up, he wants at least $16.50 Mill/yr, which means to sign him I'd have to offer him probably 18, but I can tag him for just 16.6, saving myself money. Of course the contract would be back loaded and I could sign him, then trade for someone cheap b4 the big payday and replace him, or I could tag him every yr from now till he retires making him a rich man and me oh so broke. Anyway, like explained earlier it can be a way to have someone short term or it can be a way to force someone into staying with your team.
Btw, this is just my second season in '13 and I don't see a way to tag him during the season. Last season Brent Grimes turned down my initial offer in the season, it never let me renegotiate, putting him straight into FA(so unrealistic, no renegotiation) and I had to spend a ton of money to get him, which is why I'm thinkin of tagging Matt. Do I need to wait for offseason resignings to tag him? Can I throw him a low ball now and tag him offseason?
                    Plz help, thx.

Re: Why use the Franchise Tag?

It's pretty pointless. You'd be better off offer them an extra million or two in the FA than tag them. It'd be cheaper. The tag salary of my QB was $11M and he wasn't even that good. His asking salary in the FA was $6.6M or something and I offered him $8M for 6 years. He accepted.

I always sign young players with low salary and turn them into something great. Like MLB Jay Dwyer in the FA is a 20 year old rookie with great attributes, just extremely low AWR. I signed him 6 years for $750K and by year 4, 24 years old (age of most rookies), I progressed him to 86Ovr and still had him as backup progressing through practice. "Cheesy" but it was my first CCM. I still sign him whenever I start a CCM. He's 73ovr Run Stopping Base 4-3 MLB. 20 year old rookie out of Florida State.

Love Dwyer as well. And in your situation the tag doesnt make sense. But for guys that will make close to or over the tag amount. Alla Drew Brees, it does make some sense. What he wants to do doesn't in regards to doing it every year. Tag is average of top five salaries at their position, 2nd tag is like 20% more than last and so on. So if he wants his 15M a year QB for like 5yrs and is going to tag him till he retires then its 15M, then 18M, 21.6M, 25.92, and finally 31.1M. A grand total of a 5yr $111.62M contract. Steep price when giving him what he wants/slightly over would be what 75M over that span. Back loaded at that.

I've actually used the franchise tag with this years Madden.

I offered Joe Flacco a contract which was apparently well below what he wanted. Rather than risk losing him in free agency I tagged him.

I could have let him go to free agency, but there is the possibility another team would sign him. To lessen that chance I would have to overpay him.

I also used it on Suggs a few years later. Reason being is that his contract was up and he was still an elite OLB. The problem was that he wanted a 5 year deal and was already in his 30's. I did not want to get stuck paying a 35 year old LB big money so I tagged him to get one more year out of him.
(Of course in hindsight maybe I should have extended him because now I am stuck with the OLB having no season goals glitch)

I've only used mine once, but it was because I offered a player a contract and he promptly rejected the deal and ended negotiations. I think I'd rather take my shot at offering a deal I'm comfortable with and then have to rely on the franchise tag than automatically offer every player more money. It may end up being cheaper, but only for one season and if you're overpaying everyone on your roster to try and dodge the tag, then you're wasting cap room anyway.
