Wow that's a joke. Although Montana didn't have a huge arm it was arguably stronger than that of Brady's.

Joe Montana is one of the greatest QB's of all time. But that doesn't translate to him being a 99 in every possible QB stat. The reason he slipped till the third round in the draft was because many scouts questioned his arm strength. Joe Montana was so great because he was one of the most accurate QB's to ever play the game not because he had one of the greatest arms. 87 is more than fair for him.

This. Walsh's offensive scheme fit his accuracy perfectly. Who knows if he would have just as great in a different kind of offense.

"You have to be able to knock the gloves off a receiver...I've trained Michael Vick and Donovan McNabb...and Tom Brady has the strongest arm in the NFL, bar none..."

"What separates Tom from Vick and McNabb is his visual awareness of the field---he knows exactly where to throw and when---and just that split second of superior awareness gives him the extra edge of set-up with his legs. Arm strength, ironically, all comes from the legs. You achieve explosive arm power primarily through setting a strong base with the legs."

That's from Tom Shaw who is the king of QB trainers and has worked with half of the starting QB's in the NFL today and more first round picks than any other trainer over the past 10 years.

In Walsh's west coast offense all he had to do was make short throws and the occasional play-action deep ball. That offense doesn't require you to thread the needle against elaborate and thick down-field coverages which would require a lot of arm strength.

Sounds right, and he's one of my top 3 favorite QBs ever. That wasn't exactly a strength of his so why should it be any higher? Just because he's a legendary hall of famer doesn't me he was perfect. He was never known for his throwing power.

Joe didn't have a strong arm...He could put the ball where it needed to be but he wasn't asked to throw it 40-60 yards like today QB's are....I like Joe Montana but he shouldn't have anything higher than Tom Brady.

If I remember correctly he was 1 game away from the Super Bowl with the chiefs.

I watched Joe Cool's career from start to finish, and it would be ludicrous to give him throwing power in the 90s. His game was all about anticipation, precision, and touch. A great example of his arm is the post route he threw to Rice for a TD in the Super Bowl against the Bengals. That ball wasn't on a rope; it fell right into the basket with just the right placement and touch to allow Rice to catch it in full stride without having to compromise his momentum in any way.

Brady shares some of those traits, but he's definitely developed a stronger arm.

In Montana's era many QBs had stronger arms--the Pro Bowl long toss drill and regular game tape made it clear that Cunningham, Moon, Marino, Elway, and Favre were the elite arms.

I think Montana's ball looked more like Kelly's or Kosar's than the above QBs.

Also, I do believe the legendary players are coming in with ratings that reflect the rookie versions of themselves, IIRC.
                      NCAA: Minnesota, Minnesota St-Mankato
                      NBA: Wolves
NHL: Minnesota North Stars (undefeated since 4/16/93), Wild
                      MLB: Twins, Dodgers
                      NFL: Vikings
                      MLS: Minnesota United
                      Premier League: Manchester United

True, although the stat in question is throwing power and arm strength (like speed) generally decreases as players get older.
