The upgrade is complete, but you've probably noticed the forums are only showing posts up to about April 8. Posts made after that are still in the process of being moved over, and that should take another week or two. Feel free to start a new thread.
The site might feel a little slow while work continues. Engineers are staying on it through the night to get things moving faster again. Thanks for your patience.
Since some people in this topic seem to be ignoring the obvious, I'll state it clearly: I'm not looking to be the backup who immediately takes over for the veteran despite being worse. I just want to know why it's possible to even play as a backup if it's literally impossible to progress sufficiently to ever have a starting role. That's all.
It's a third string running back. A speed rating in the low 80's is actually the least of his concerns --- there are other abilities you'd need to improve to get that overall rating higher. Even if you upgraded his speed to 99 it'd be useless if he has an overall rating of 58 and has no other redeeming qualities.
Long story short: you need to focus on other abilities before going "all-in" on only one.
Speed costs 19,000 points to upgrade, which is the obvious first priority as an 83 speed running back. juke move, in contrast, costs 2,500. That means I can increase my juke by a few points per season at best, which doesn't help my overall at all.
Oh, you're just trolling. Never mind.
Of course speed costs more, how many people get that much faster once they are of the age to be in the NFL? speed isn't really a skill you can improve too much IRL. when creating a player do you get to pick what type of back you want to be?

I get what you're saying that speed is crazy to progress but I think what people are saying is that the way to become that starter isn't purely through speed. Becoming a better rounded HB to become the starter and THEN upgrading speed is a better route.
A guy can have crazy speed but if he fumbles all the time, can't block, or isn't elusive in any other way probably won't start over a slightly slower HB that has all those other qualities.
If you just want to build purely on speed, then yes it's skewed insurmountably against you. On the other hand if you can focus on becoming a more well rounded elusive back then maybe you can earn the starting position and speed will be easier to upgrade.
I do practices. The problem is how ineffectual they are. 1k points over 4 preseason weeks plus every week of the season means it takes all year to increase speed from 83 to 84... and that's all I can do. That's my only improvement all year.
Stop worrying about your speed then lol. Good lord raise your other attributes up to get more playing time then if you want to waste points on speed you can do it when you have the opportunity to get more xp.

Exactly this --- and I echo what Brother3Wright said, you're better off trying to make yourself a "complete" speed back instead of trying to upgrade a singular category.
I think his point is not being able to gain XP from games.

That's a tough point, especially when considering his player's position on the depth chart. In that sense, it's a bit more realistic because second and third stringers need to earn their opportunities (either through injury or whatnot). Also, earning XP has to do with meeting strict goals, so I think that plays into it as well. That's one of the downfalls of CCM --- if those goals aren't met then it's harder to progress.

You don't seem to understand. This approach would give me, at maximum, +1 overall per year. This is reduced every time I actually lose in practice because of Alex Smith (roughly 1/4 of the time despite having at least 150+ yards and 1 TD per practice).
