Eyes Glued to Twitter - The Fate of Player Editing Hangs in the Balance

Via Twitter, many of us have asked Josh Looman if player editing can be patched into Madden 13. Yesterday Looman responded saying that EA is "looking into it." Since I read that tweet yesterday, I have spent more time refreshing Looman's Twitter page than I have playing Madden.

Reason to be optimistic - Looman said that they're "looking into" adding player editing. He hasn't dismissed it in the same way that he did fantasy draft. He told us fantasy draft will not be in Madden 13, but he has not said that about player editing.

Reason to be pessimistic - This is EA we're talking about. With no competition to speak of, they may decide only to patch things that are absolutely broken, and not things that will appease customers.

If we strike gold and they do patch in player editing, the first thing I'm doing is sliding Peyton Hillis over to the fullback position.

Let me ask u tho, why not just make hillis #1 fullback on ur depth chart? Regardless of what his position technically is hes the same person wherever he plays.

I just hope that editing players doesn't somehow break the dynamics of CCM, since the two seem to be linked. I can live with editing a player somehow messing with his story line...I just won't edit players.

But I'm hoping that should a patch be released, it doesn't just effect the story line dynamic overall. We know how wonky patches can be.

I'm actually terrified of patches after what happened with NBA 2K9. The patch that caused bigs to hover around the perimeter and shoot if they got the ball. And we all know about the debacle that was NCAA 12 w/ patch-work. Sometimes the trade-off isn't worth it.

I dunno...I don't wanna be insensitive and say "just deal with it" but this has me leery.

^This. Fortunately if player editing is patched in, it's only an option. If it causes problems you simply don't edit anyone.

If it's patched, I don't see release of patch into the month of October.

You are crazy if you think they are gonna patch it in.

            Why would they?

On a personal note it really bothers me that if I put him at the fullback position on the depth chart, he'll take a hit in awareness. I won't be controlling him all the time and awareness is a big deal for players being controlled by the CPU (so basically it would impact his pass and run blocking because his awareness would be lower).

Also, if he were to make the Pro Bowl it would be as a HB not a FB. Even if I played him all year at the fullback position all season.

May not be a big deal to some people, but it pains me to play players "out of position" on the depth chart because of the awareness drop.

I just want to change jersey numbers and equipment. I guess changing positions is nice too though.

See "Reason to be optimistic." Looman could have said no (like he did with fantasy draft), but he hasn't yet, which offers a glimmer of hope.

I can understand if we won't get skill attribute editing this year, if they think that will throw the new XP based progression system for a loop... I get that. But at the minimum, I think equipment, jersey numbers and position changes (to a degree) should be allowed. I would not want the ability to change a QB into a punter... as that could also lead to unintended problems with contract offers and progression.... but you should be generally free to convert like position types. Don't see a huge issue converting a LT to RG, CB to FS, TE to FB, etc.

It's also linked to the dynamics of CCM tho, we don't know what potential issues could arise by them altering the code to unlock the ability to change the particulars of a player outside of the progression system.

We've seen examples of this sort of thing in the past, you know...where one option should have nothing to do with another....except it does? Like in one of the past NCAAs (I think 12, but not sure) if you edited a player, then it changed his tendency. So all of the custom named rosters had the issue, and needed to be patched.

I'm not saying this will happen, but if the chances are there at all, I'm nervous about it.

Why limit anyone's choices? Your money, your game.

But I'm not holding my breath. I don't see it happening via patch. I have probably just as much luck as a flying chimp landing on my porch as I do seeing them patch in the ability, limited or not, to edit players.
The Last of Us is the Citizen Kane of video-games. It is better than every game that has ever come before it, and is the new benchmark for all games to follow. It is nothing short of a work of art.

I don't care about ratings/positions at this point but give us the ability for jersey numbers and equipment

I'm going to bet they add very limited editing (name number), the other things editing could fix I think they will deliberately leave out so they still have control of offline connected careers. Will editing name and number be enough? From what I'm reading on other forums, people want the old franchise mode back so I don't think just name and number will appease the masses. Some people may be able to deal with it though. I for one need total control for offline before I hop back on the wagon.

With full customization like 12, you could go through and change whatever you wanted. They should be able to come to a compromise. If full editing causes adverse effects, it can't be any worse than it currently is and if it doe create an issue, let the user know ahead of time what editing may effect and let them decide from there. Even if they have to make progression automated it would still accomplish what everyone wants. I would rather deal with issues I can fix, then to wait months for a patch.
